ILR --> Computer Science.....Spring Courseload + Pledging...too heavy?

I saw the other thread on course load and Frat rushing, so I thought I’d ask away too haha:

I’m gonna be going from ILR to Computer Science in CAS…I’ve already taken 2 courses, and they weren’t that bad, except the last one where I have to re-take it (don’t want to talk about it haha).

I’ve pre-enrolled in 3 comp sci classes for Spring Semester (CS 280, CS 312, CS 480…sorry dont remember the exact numbers), 1 Calculus class (MAth 113 or something), and 1 ILR Labor Econ class.

How much of a course load will I be having? I’m also in a bunch of clubs, doing tons of **** for the Cornell Daily Sun, and my own business.

I’m also looking to join a frat, so I’ll definitely be partying through Rush Week, and possibly pledging.

Now my question is, does that sound realistic? Or should I forget about pledging a frat? And has anyone taken those above-mentioned courses already?

doesn’t seem very reasonable to me. granted i don’t know how much work you need to put into your school but cs 280 and 312 are serious courses that will definitely take a solid chunk of your time. the calc and ilr classes are prolly a breeze. i would say take 2 comp sci classes (forget the 480 one) and pledge a frat. you’ll still be able to do your clubs and your classes will be alright provided you can pull a couple late nights. also depending on the frat you might find it easier (ie. an older brother might be a cs major who can help you out). don’t bail on greek life for the sake of going crazy with school for a semester. fraternities can be a good opportunity for learning a lot about yourself and getting a different perspective on cornell. well thats my two cents, hopefully some of you other guys take it to heart. good luck man.

If you failed the last CS class you took- call me crazy, but is it a good idea to take 3 upper-level CS classes this semester?

wordup32 & lianri:

Thanks a lot for your responses! The reason I’m taking a bunch of upper-CS classes is because I want to do a Direct Transfer into Comp Sci at the end of Spring. (I’m a Sophomore, btw). I’m pretty sure I can rock all A’s next semester even with the CS courses…I flunked the CS one this time, not because I couldn’t understand the material, but because I did literally no homework (too busy with other stuff)…I actually did pretty good on the final.

But you’re both right. I probably should drop the 480 class. So, from reading both your responses, I take it that my current Spring semester is gonna be hell? haha…thanks for the heads up; as for pleding a frat, I think I still will, but I’m going to think about what you’ve said and probably drop a few upper-level CS courses.

No, not necessarily gonna be hell. Sometimes 400-level classes are even easier than 300-levels, though it’s rare… it can all just be random. (Try checking ratemyprofessors.com to see how hard courses will be) If you’d like to take all those courses my advice would be to sign up for 5 courses, one of which is pretty easy (no matter what field) and if one of those CS classes is too hard, drop it and go with the easier class.

You should take HR260 instead of labor econ if you want to take an easy ILR class while you’re in the internal transfer division.

Oooh yeah that’s true you will be in ITD if you didn’t do very well this past semester and want to transfer colleges.
In which case… they might even make you take easier classes. Not sure, though

don’t underestimate the commitment to pledging too. depending on the fraternity you may find it pretty consuming. good luck…

Thats a good idea; I probably should be taking the easier ILR classes…I did drop HR260 at the beginning, so I planned on taking it again anyways.

I’ll be rushing all the top frats, so there would probably be a lot of committment to show.

I already know I won’t be getting much sleep Spring Semester haha

bear in mind there’s no such thing as a “top” frat. don’t go somewhere just because they have a solid rep with getting easy girls and hordes of freshman to trash their house…i’m not calling anyone out, i’m just warning you to be wary of people ranking frats.

Coming from a CS major, you’re going to have a really hard semester. 312 is easily the most time-consuming class I’ve taken at Cornell so far, and from what I hear its the hardest CS class in the curriculum, especially since Myers is teaching. I remember spending 25+ hours each on the final 2-3 projects. 280 is pretty easy for math-types, as is 482.
