Is it okay to drink when you’re taking medication at all? I know that one can’t drink as much as other on meds, but how much is too much? I’m asking this because I’m going to a club tomorrow night and there is going to be a lot of drinking. There is a planned designated driver so I’m 100% sure most of my friends will drink. I’m not pressured to drink, but I don’t want to feel left out or make anything awkward for anyone.
I don’t want to ask a professional because I know they’re going to say no drinking at all to avoid a lawsuit aka cover their ass.
I have to take the meds tomorrow because I have a job interview tomorrow afternoon and I want to appear stable.
What should I do? I want to live like a normal college student. I’m a commuter, so I don’t get many partying opportunities.

you should drink as much as possible right before your job interview

What kind of meds? Depending on what they are yes it is possible they are very dangerous. For instance if the drug you are taking is some kind of depressant then yes drinking would be a very bad idea. CC is probably not the best place to ask. Ask a doctor, do an internet search on the drug, or to a forum not populated by whiny teenagers.

whatever you’re on, it probably won’t hurt to have one or mayyyybe two drinks. i wouldn’t have any more than that, though.

Yes, it is an anti-depressant and a very small dose of an anti-psychotic which is prescribed to augment extreme anxiety disorders. I hope I don’t get bored or left out if I don’t drink ![]()
I don’t know why I posted this here lol. I guess I just wanted as many opinions as possible.

Anti-depressant? Yeah probably best to avoid drinking. Taking SSRIs, TCAs, and ESPECIALLY MAOIs with alcohol can counteract the medication and can **** you up dangerous, and in ways that alcohol alone wouldn’t.

Stick to something safer like weed.

^Wow. Weed is safer? The SSRI mix is probably not even worth the mix with alcohol.

With SSRIs? Probably not. I meant Weed as a substitute for the drugs, haha. But don’t listen to me. No one here including me is a doctor; just bored kids ****ing around between finals…

if everyone else is drunk they wont’ care what you act like.

You need to ask your doctor that question, not uninformed strangers on an Internet board.

^ I was just afraid that the doctor would say no just because he wants to cover himself if I go to the hospital for my irresponsibility or some lawsuit drama.
That’s probably unlikely though since I think he’s an honest person. It’s just that I’ve heard of people drinking on medication.
I’m not that eager to drink anyway. Getting that bad taste down my mouth is another story.

Anti-depressant? Usually a HUGE no-no.

From my experience - DON’T.
Some drink with some kinds of medicine (for example antibiotics or painkillers - VERRY bad for your liver, you get drunk fast, but people do it), but with an anxiety disorder?
Not a good idea. Alcohol ****s up your meds, also the feel of losing control can induce panic attacks.

What medications specifically? If it’s Xanax, then stay away from alcohol. Leave mixing to the pros.

Research into supplements for this sort of issue so you can eventually get off those things and enjoy life.

[5-Hydroxytryptophan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](5-Hydroxytryptophan - Wikipedia)

CC is definitely not the place to ask this; here all you’ll get are overachievers telling you not to drink at all.

But I’ll answer this anyway: don’t drink on SSRIs.

Once again if you don’t want to drink, AND you have an important interview tomorrow, why on earth should you feel the need to? If they’re good friends they won’t be pressuring you, just dance and relax without the booze. (By the way I have no moral qualm with drinking myself but I can relate to you; I’m also on serious medication and don’t like the taste of alcohol too much; hence I never drink).

I’ve drank and been on SSRI’s before and it’s had no known side effects. I would recommend doing it if you have a job interview coming up just because you don’t know how your body is going to react. It also depends on what kind of medication you are on. Are you on intense treatments? As a general rule, if you need the medication to function properly and you’re unsure of the chemical reaction, stay clear. If you’re on a medication (especially mood alterations) you’ll probably be fine.

Find the warning label on your medication. It should tell you if alcohol is a serious risk or not. If in doubt, consult your doctor. They have rules of confidentiality so it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get in trouble.

If you’re not pressured to drink, why would it make anything awkward for anyone?

Would it be possible to swap with the designated driver for tonight? Then you wouldn’t feel bad about not drinking, plus it will get you off the hook for designated driver some time in the future when you wouldn’t be on the meds.

Not to say drinking on meds is a good idea but it does depend on what you’re taking. I think SSRI’s mainly compound the effect of alcohol, so you would want to take it very slowly. (I’ve noticed effects from less than one drink taking an SSRI but I’m a lightweight anyway). So take it slowly and drink less. If it’s Wellbutrin, though, any alcohol increases your likelihood of having a seizure. So be careful with that…

are you planning to get yourself killed?!
you could die or go in a coma if you drink and you are on anti-depresssants.
don’t be stupid. you can have a good time without drinking. and wth are you asking this on CC? geez look at your damn prescription bottle. or talk to the doctor.
