My parents say they won’t pay for my college unless I get into University of Michigan or above. They won’t even pay if Michigan State University or Central Michigan are my only options.
I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried telling them there’s no guarantee I’ll get into an Ivy League and Stanford, and that they accept less than ten percent of applicants. Even U of M might be hard for me, because I don’t play any sports and I don’t have much of any hooks.
What should I do?
Maybe you should try reasoning with them. Explain that you understand they want you to attend a highly ranked college, but you cannot control how your admissions decisions. Say you will take out some loans or get a job, but you would greatly appreciate it if they could help out.
You could also mention that going to an instate public might be more cost effective in the long run.
My folks gave me a similar option. I left home because of it. Was hard, but went to state school and succeeded without them. I wouldn’t suggest this however. Second the poster who said to try reasoning with them. Maybe school college counselor could help explain realities? Good luck.
