but if we make these immigrants legal, then would it stop other immigrants from other latin american countries to come here?..that would give them a golden opportunity to come here because they can just say “all i have to do this cross the wall and boom im American”
i mean people wouldnt even want to go to heaven, because they will be in paradise right here on earth: USA

A.S.A.P – I’m with you, and I won’t pretend to have the solutions. I do think it’s like many other business-related issues. If it’s a question of putting personal profits over the well being of the society at large, money will win out unless some larger agency (e.g., the government) intervenes and places some defining controls. This is one of those times when the government has a job to do. It gets played as government interference, but it’s as much government interference as speed limits are. Business needs to know its limits under the law. And, to be clear, business here is filling a real need. This isn’t just greedy business people, it’s all of us, every US consumer, profiting. So maybe we all need to know our limits.

BestMiller1, your questions raise so many more questions about the inequality of opportunity throughout the world and the responsibilities of a richer nation towards poorer ones. The ideal immigration policy – whatever it is – would be equitable, clear-cut, and enforceable and would work in concert with the nations these immigrants call home to balance our needs for workers with their need to retain their citizens and create more vibrant home economies of their own. In that scenario, the hordes of illegals will eventually choose home over an inhospitable foreign land. Did someone say I was in a “daisy world.” Oh, man, I wish. My daisy world dream.

*What Would Mexico Do with Protesting Illegals?, Heather Mac Donald writes: *

If Mexico wants to dictate our immigration policy to us, lets follow their example to the letter. That example is particularly relevant on this further day of protests demanding amnesty for illegals. Among the demonstrators in at least 60 cities nationwide will undoubtedly be thousands of border lawbreakers. What would Mexico do? The answer is easy: deport them on the spot. In 2002, a dozen American college students, in Mexico legally, participated peacefully in an environmental protest against a planned airport outside of Mexico City. **They swiftly found themselves deported as law-breakers for interfering in Mexicos internal affairs. **

If Mexico was willing to strip these students of their duly-obtained travel visas, imagine what it would have done had the students broken into the country surreptitiouslynot just summary deportation but undoubtedly howls of complaint to the U.S. government for winking at this double violation of Mexican sovereignty.

There are problems with having unknown people coming over borders. The importance of this problem is being ovrblown for political purposes. The vast majority of people crossing over from Mexico work as hard as anyone could imagine. Our economy relies on this cheap labor, and a lot of wealthy people profit from the availibility of this labor. If we went door to door and deported all undocumented workers among other things there would be a food shortage in this country. Construction would slow down (maybe that would be okay) and the cost of staying in a hotel or eating at a resturant would jump. I have no statistics to support this but make these statements based on my own observations of who is doing the grunt work at so many businesses I have been in.

Sometimes when I hear or read comments like those posted here, I recall the Senator in the musical Finnian’s Rainbowwho said, “my family has been having problems with immigrants ever since we came to this country.” We all came from somewhere, I certainly don’t mind moving over to make room, for our amigos from the south.

How would you feel if they earned their citizenship by working on public works projects, including nursing homes, clearing brush at national parks and picking up litter for local governments…or maybe they already are taking those jobs.

* think it will become the norm because white folks have decided to stop reproducing*

We were going to stop at one because we couldn’t afford anymore kids
what a novel idea
are you saying that “white” people should reproduce because they need someone for their retirement plan?
I think this planet has more than enough people don’t you?

Banks Open Doors for Illegal Immigrants
By Miriam Jordan
From The Wall Street Journal Online

*Javier and Araceli Garcia, illegal immigrants from Mexico, never imagined that the U.S. government would help them realize their dream of owning a home.

But last year, the couple secured a $54,600 mortgage to buy the gray, 1,158-square-foot bungalow that they had been renting for eight months. The Wisconsin housing authority financed the loan. The Internal Revenue Service gave them an identification number that enabled them to apply for it at local Mitchell Bank, which was happy to take their business.

“We thought we would never buy a home, because of our [illegal] status,” said Mrs. Garcia.

Competition for new customers is driving banks to offer home loans and other financial services to illegal immigrants – and they are getting help from government agencies, such as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The FDIC encourages banks to lend and invest in underserved markets regardless of customers’ immigration status.*

Great, now they are helping illegal immigrants to get homes in the USA. Don’t they realize that by doing this state officials are creating double standards here? The one reason why it’s extremely difficult for Americans to obtain homeownership is because we have a credit history that sometimes works against us.

^^ that is soo true
and so sad that “now they are helping illegal immigrants to get homes in the USA”

Tale of the tape:

“Immigration Rallies” 1,200 views

On an issue that concerns our national sovereignty, uncontrolled borders and infiltration by unknown aliens, terrorists, criminals, and potential breakaway of south western US states in due time, only
1200 or so people got interested.

Thats says a lot about our priorities. Perhaps that says even more about what citizens of the United States deserve (if we don’t care or are misled by phoney, sentimental slogans, and taken advantage of because of our good nature).

1) They don’t live in a border state and don’t think it affects them
2) They, as do some of the elites in Washington, don’t think there’s a problem.
3) They are afraid they will be labeled a racist if they speak out

Back during Rita, when people were fleeing Houston, a chartered bus full of nursing home evacuees exploded and the driver could not speak English and sherrif’s dept. said that contributed to 23 deaths.

It also reflects the fact that we most all have children about the age of the young men and the young woman in question, on some level we see our children reflected in them - and we are afraid.

Cangel, you are right, and when it comes to our kids - well, they trump most anything else going on.

Write your congression to let them how YOU want them to vote in this important national issue.

It’s not too late, even by Easter. When you write, just write big plain letters, yea or nay or simple sentences. All they do is have staff tally up for and against.

Actually it shows that 6 people in each thread have nothing better to do.

I think the elephant in the room really is race in the immigration issue. The United States has a long history of defining who can and who cannot become a citizens based on ideas of whiteness at the time. Initially only whites were eligible to become citizens-despite the presence of African-Americans and Native Americans throughout the 13 colonies. Of course, later, the Chinese Exclusion Act targeted Orientals and the 1924 Immigration Act targets Eastern and Southern European immigrants whose whiteness was contested at the time period. Now Hispanics are not seen as white in the public discourse-despite many of them being light skinned. Southern and Eastern Europeans largely became “white” only when African-Americans moved into the industrial North and took their place as the racial “other.” Frankly, I’m embarrassed that our country has the audacity to deny people any legal protections when we stole and killed/murdered the original human inhabitants of the continent. Furthermore, in more recent time, as it’s already been pointed out, the US stole California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas from the people we now are trying to keep out! History is full of ironies.

“are you saying that “white” people should reproduce because they need someone for their retirement plan?
I think this planet has more than enough people don’t you?”

Just the opposite. I think immigration works - I just think we need more of it.

I am sure given the choice today to go with Mexico or the US the states mentioned would vote easily to stay US.
And many Hispanics self-identify as white.

Phampson, why do you think African Americans oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants?

Mini, why did Oprah hold a show on families who make the minimum wage? These were regular Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. And more job competition is not the answer they will like to hear. I think the majority of these people will agree that mass (unregulated) immigration will NOT improve America.

I agree too…this sums up everything…so true and so sad

Why of course! Oprah needs viewers! Especially folks who are not out working during the day!

The poor are always exploited. Nothing new there. 75% of migrants are paying taxes, paying into YOUR Social Security (they don’t collect a dime), YOUR Medicare (they don’t collect a dime), for YOUR army to go half way around the world.

There is no competition for agricultural jobs. Anyone of any color can come out to our fields and orchards in eastern Washington and pick. Until 5 years ago, none of the workers were local; any white person or Black person or pink person could come out and get a job at well more than minimum wage. Any white person or Black person or pink person can go to New Orleans today and get a construction job at triple the minimum wage. Or they can go to the chicken processing plants in Georgia where they are begging for workers. Or they can certify as nurses’ aides - my community is begging for workers. Or they can start businesses, like the two local restaurants in my community that employ 80 workers, most of them white.

Americans are indeed struggling to make ends meet. Corporations are not paying for health care - that’s not the fault of immigrants. Industrial inspectons are way down, and health care costs associated with industrial accidents are way up - that’s not the fault of immigrants. Pensions are going belly-up, and white-color middle class jobs are disappearing - that’s not the fault of immigrants. Jobs are being shipped abroad - to places like China where companies enjoy the benefits of communism - that’s not the fault of immigrants.

Mass immigration has improved America in the past, and will continue to improve America in the future. I am enjoying the fruit of that immigration now, and I expect to do more so when my Social Security and Medicare kick in. But if there aren’t more immigrants, who’s going to pay for it? (Granted, there’s tons of money, for just about everything, if our fearless one hadn’t led us on our great adventure to the Tigris and Euphrates.)

Total immigration is at its lowest point in 20 years, and THAT’s a problem.

The 300 millionth American will be born this year, or walk across the border.
