IMSA Applicant Class of 2018

Mine was something I could legitimately do… I wrote about a playground that would produce electricity. Piezoelectric crystals in the jungle gym, old fashioned generators in a merry go round and swings… It’s not as cool a concept, but I liked how it’s more feasible given my limited education. I’m actually considering trying to put it in action. I’ve never worked with piezoelectricity, but it seems cool…

The first, I wrote about myself, wanting to reach out of my comfort zone, my experiences with art and music and what those have taught me, etc. I also said that learning to get along with others is part of maturing.

Second related science to the Epic of Gilgamesh, immortality through leaving a mark on the world.

Third, I wrote about learning science through my dad and about learning to program an arduino.

That’s really interesting. I think it would have been cool to go into more detail about my urban planning app (basically, a matrix that determines what would be the most optimal layout of a street, trees, sidewalks, etc.) but with the 250 word limit, there were too many constrictions. My first essay had to do with living in San Francisco and the different languages and cultures I met there (at one point, I listed 23 countries that my friends had come from, but my English teacher told me it read like a laundry list so I left that out) and how that impacted my ability to embrace different backgrounds. I also briefly went over the books/movies I like reading (because they show my interest in architecture and urban planning). If any of you said you wanted to change something academically or socially, what was it?

Mine was about how I wish to reinstate the values and foundation of humanity and a global society via a line of everyday universal applications that aim to “brighten” everybody’s days and are only spread and advertised through human-human interaction which sort of forces a process of building a global community. The whole thing was aimed towards advancing the human condition by again, reinstating the foundation of a global community which obviously we have far and widely broken apart from, which without, I state that at some point we will not be able to continue. Of course, due to the 250 word limit, I couldn’t really go too into detail, and typing the whole topic of the essay takes a good chunk of the limit as well. Anyway, it was sort of like a chain reaction thing where I was aiming small, 5-10 people, then being expanded exponentially by human to human interaction. I read all of your guys’s essays and they sound very innovative and simply original.

Guys what we are doing here is actually really helpful for next years class of IMSA students regardless of whether we get in or not

1rst one- “What has sparked my interest in math and science”
How dissecting a cow’s eye at IMSA’s Summer camp eventually leaded to my interest in Science and Medicine and how that eventually led to me finding out about IMSA and its oppurtunities.
2nd one- “Advancement of the Human Condition”
How I want to become a neurologist and what that’s gonna do to change the world
3rd one- “How will I change myself to adapt to IMSA.”
Change my shy nature, become more social, stop procrastinating, interaction…
4th one- Innovation essay
Easy Snap Power Lines. Power lines that easily disconnect during a storm, flood or natural disaster to prevent cut power lines and help induce a “safer environment for people, animals and rescuers in general.”

Oh and my 4th essay was about how broken classroom education is and what technology can be changed to make schools more efficient and communication easier with students and teachers.

@priyaluvsbooks‌ Heey I want to go into neurology as well! (Neuroscience, actually. Slight but important difference) Any idea specifically what topic interests you? (Information processing and understanding neurological diseases always looked cool to me)

@aminorspark Neurosurgery. And I would like to research how the , consciousness, mind and the brain are interrelated.

@theeedog‌ Definitely. I wish I’d found this website earlier, though :stuckouttongueclosedeyes:

@theeedog‌, @priyaluvsbooks‌ I love cardiology and hematology. It’s so amazing. Neurosurgery is cool too.

Where do you guys plan on your careers taking you? The city? Outside of Chicago (maybe Silicon Valley)?

I know that Chicago is really big on urban planning, but I’m probably going to go back to the West Coast when I graduate high school. The ideal scenario for me is joining the SF planning department or joining Skidmore Owings and Merrill as an architect (though I’m leaning more towards being an urban planner).

If in Silicon valley, the only thing that really interests me is Google X. Otherwise, I plan my career at google, apple, etc. Google is like the big break.

@dimsumnoodles‌ I’m not entirely sure. Probably working for a university or a medical corporation.

I am not too keen on working for a big corporation. I am more interested in the startup scene and kind of building myself up. I like business and technology and I feel like if I work for a company I won’t be getting both.

I really just want to do science. Control-group-dependent-variable-formulate-a-hypothesis science. Designs and small start ups are nice, but they don’t really mesh with the kind of research I want to do.

idk. I really wanna get into the Southwestern Direct med program, and then ddo some research in Cambridge…
Okay. So we have a whoppin 3 and a half months before we get our letters.

Which reminds me. Which one of you are guys and which ones are girls? Just wondering about the roomie situation

I’m a Chinese guy.

@Farriswheelz Hi! I read that u got accepted into IMSA on the old thread. Care to share ur experiences? And, do u by any chance know Nitya Talasila?
