IMSA Applicant Class of 2018

There is no set value … You understand how the waitlist works right? Like they don’t have spots that they reserve specifically for waitlisted people …

@AviSaxena33 Idk supposedly they have a “secret list” that organizes the waitlisted students…

@priyaluvsbooks I’m sure regardless of the claims they make of not having a ranking on the waitlist they do rank the waitlist because picking random people off the waitlist to get in next seems very disorganized and more of a lottery thing rather than application based. However, I suppose they could have a set value, but it seems unlikely if they do actually have limited space available.

In my optional statement would I have to state why I’m younger than most freshman

@ck1012 I emailed Mrs. Kelly Lofgren and she said that it is not necessary but you could add information in which you’re comfortable sharing.

@AviSaxena33 Well, it’s not really random. Yes, by this point, its is more based on luck than in the initial race, but I wouldn’t say random. With 79 people on the waitlist, I feel that some sort of list is needed though.

What do you all mean when speaking of the “modified GPA?” In IMSA’s FAQs, it says that IMSA does not use a GPA. When you say it takes 6th, 7th, and 8th grade grades and finds the mean does that “mean” that my graduating GPA has already been determined? If this is not the case, could you please explain why IMSA doesn’t use the standard GPA system and how this may affect college applications? Thanks!

@Georgules They take 6th 7th and 8th or 7th 8th and 9th 1st semester English math and science grades instead of accumulative grade of each grade level from all subjects which is why it is known as the modified GPA

@AviSaxena33 So is that our starting GPA sophmore year or is that our graduating GPA? Thanks

So if I have a GPA of 3.6 lets just say. But, everything else in the application is perfect, would they still not accept me due to my low GPA?

Just curious … Any waitlisted people get any notifications yet? Also, do they tell you if you are not accepted?

@lsutiger25
From my perspective, my essays were probably on the lower end of what would be accepted. Other aspects of my application were good, and in general essay writing tends not to be my strong suit. But then, I’ve never seen anyone else’s essays, so I don’t really know.
Typically, 600 or so students apply, 200 are accepted, and 20-80 are waitlisted. If you’re applying as an eighth grader, you can’t be waitlisted. There is probably some type of order to the waitlist based on merit, but also they take people of the same gender if people decline.
@Georgules
“Modified GPA” is the GPA imsa calculates for your admission. Imsa says they do not have a GPA because current students do not have a GPA/class rank.
If you are accepted to IMSA, you will not have a GPA, but you will still have grades. Those will be used when applying to college. Your grades from Middle School probably won’t have any bearing on your college application, although it depends where you apply.

@priyaluvsbooks could I see your essays, I know I got in this year but my writing was pretty bad. It looks like you have a really good essay. My email is akashgandhi2014@ googles email system

um yeah. I’ll share them with you on google docs…

@YoloSwagMaster may I see yours?

I would like to see yours as well, if that’s okay. Those accepted 8th grade essays must’ve been amazing. @YoloSwagMaster

@YoloSwagMaster Also did you get straight A’s in 6th 7th and 8th grade, and were you in advanced programs?

@priyaluvsbooks @vniatge @Isutiger25 I will send you the essays. Idk how i got in honestly. My sat scores wee 700+ and I had straight a+'s, I think that’s what made up for the bad essays.

@Isutiger25. I never got a b on my report card in my life.

@YoloSwagMaster Yes yes, but were you in like advanced programs or gifted programs?
