Imsa applicant class of 2019

Uhmmm…@floridagators100 I would say something more unique would be better. Like I have 2 international awards in MUN, Mate and 6 state awards in math science and robotics. Please don’t think I’m bragging, I’m just trying to say that I think more awards would make you stand out more. Once again I’m trying not to brag but those are my stats. Besides I’m not taking your fancy calc 2 classes and running out of math classes like you guys. So yeah.

I’m so excited! I’m at scholastic bowl and we’re going against IMSA A team!

We only got 270 to their like 350 but I’m so happy! I mean, we’re JV competing at a Varsity comp so

???!¿¿ CC isn’t letting me edit. *550, not 350

@floridagators100 I had a 700-700 SAT score 3.93 GPA ( I got a B in Hon. Alg 2/Trig - only B ever :frowning: ) uh quite a few awards, state for robotics etc, I volunteered, proficient in 4 languages
that’s the gist of it

u should be fine…getting in really isn’t that hard…I looked through your stats and they all seem fine. Try to boost up your GPA but that shouldn’t affect the admissions process too much.

@priyaluvsbooks Uh will you chance me cause I’m from metea as well? 700 Math, 650 CR. GPA 3.8 (7th grade 3.4 8th grade 4.0 9th grade: at a 4.0 also I’m doing Pre calc in 9th grade :D). State science fair gold. Tennis for 6 years. CTD. Mathcounts. robotics. Stem club. Debate team.

So hows me chances.

Oh whoops don’t read that ^^^^^ @priyaluvsbooks I didn’t like see the other page so I thought you didn’t chance me lol xD

What are the main reasons people don’t get into IMSA?

@priyaluvsbooks hello, I was wondering were did you put in your application that your volunteered? I want to add that since I do a lot of volunteering (sending care packages to dyployed troops, making teddy bears to give to children at deployments, and other stuff) I just don’t no where to mention that stuff.

When I sat down with one of the three admission officers I asked them that exact question. They said there isn’t a place to put it, they said put it on your essay but don’t say the exact hours and specifics just casually

Qpint22

@Qpint22 I didn’t put it in my essays @YoloSwagMaster I put it in my extracurriculars column. I volunteered at a legitamate hospital so it made sense to put it in. If you volunteer in a various of places etc. then put it in your essays or just state it in the optional, or extracurricular paragraphs/columns.
@floridagators100 The main reason kids dont make it into IMSA is if their essays arent good. To be honest, a good GPA would be above 3.8 and a good SAT score is at or above 1350. To them there is no difference between a 1400 and a 1450. Same for the GPA’s. Focus on your essays and extracurriculars, because those are what show the admissions counselors who you really are. Similarly, just because your from Metea doesnt matter at all. around 1/3 of my class is from the Naperville/Aurora area. They don’t discriminate that much. Neither does it matter if you’re asian/white/indian/hispanic/black. There are certain advantages but those are really small, so it’s not gonna matter if you have a bad GPA and you’re hispanic. You won’t make it in. IMSA wants to see that you are taking advantage of the school that you’re in. If they see that you aren’t then it doesn’t matter that you have a perfect SAT score or are a genius, they won’t accept you.

@priyaluvsbooks What exactly does IMSA want to hear in the essays though? Like, give an example from your essays, and how you think it got you accepted. (Sorry for bad grammar currently on phone).

@priyaluvsbooks @floridagators100 thanks both of you. I have it mentioned very briefly in my essay and have it listed in extracurriculars since I have devoted a bunch of time to plus held a lot of positions. I guess I’ll keep it like that. Also on the service project essay question do you think the service project should be centered around STEM? Again thanks.

@priyaluvsbooks I am applying to IMSA this year also from 203/204 area. Can I ask you a few questions? Is IMSA much harder than your old school? Is your GPA better/worse? Also I heard that Naperville kids are dominating especially seniors. True? I know some 203 kids last couple of year who got in but didn’t go because they think they will get into better colleges from their home school than IMSA. Is this a concern?

@priyaluvsbooks Ok. so I may be compromised this semester and end with a B in Pre calc and I know I have a ton of time improving it. But if I do end with B i will have like a 3.77 or something like that. To compensate I have to get 1400 (I got 1350 first time) right. I took November SAT and I expect 1400. So, is 3.77 with 1400 as good as 3.8 with 1350?

@floridagators100 So concerning the essays, make the essay’s as much about you as possible. The reason we had to write essays is because admissions wants to get to know us. In all of my essay’s I described my passion for math and science and how I want to enter the medical field. @Qpint22 The service project essay doesn’t necessarily have to be around STEM. It can be whatevery idea you have that you want to expand on. Mine was on STEM but my friends was on school/education statistics. We both got in.
@survivorfan1 IMSA is harder. That’s not even a question. When I took the first test in physics I got a D,D,D. A lot of your firsts here are gonna be lower than you expect. Now, I’m up to an A in physics and its okay. IMSA teaches us how to struggle and work hard- which many kids haven’t done yet. My GPA is about the same. I’m pretty sure I’m just getting one B this semester. I got 1 B ninth grade too. A lot of kids are getting B’s and C’s and that’s okay- because IMSA is a lot harder than any where else. Uh…if you come to IMSA then the seniors (who are juniors right now) are predominantly from the naperville area. This year, my class is actually pretty well rounded. But I’m pretty sure a good 50-65 people are from Aurora/Naperville.
If you come to IMSA then getting into UIUC is not that hard. Most people get in. 152 applied in 2015 and 148 got in. But IMSA kids predominantly go to very good colleges.
@floridagators100 your GPA is a little low so try to pull it up, but if you cant then you should be okay as long as your extracurriculars and essays are up to par. Don’t try calculating what admissions will do because they are so unpredictable that it’s unbelievable. I know a girl who got in with 550-550 SAT scores…Don’t worry about it. If you can’t fix it then stressing over it will only make it worse.

@priyaluvsbooks I meant the current seniors. We have a family friend whose nephew is a current senior at IMSA. She said that the senior class is very competitive and that Naperville kids are dominating. The current junior class according to her is not as competitive. My current class is fairly strong. We will probably lose a few kids to IMSA, me included. I just haven’t decided yet if I will go. I just want to have a feel on how tough it is to be on top at IMSA. We must admit that although you will get a bump because of IMSA name you still have to be near the top to get to the tippy top school. I looked at the profile from last two years and I am surprised that the number of kids who go to top colleges (not just good) is not as many as I expected. I’m not too worried about getting to UIUC. Our school sends a lot of kids there with probably more AP credits than typical IMSA kids. Your opinion and observations are highly appreciated. Thanks got spending time answering our questions.
