In a dilemma...

Hello all!

I was recently denied to admission to Boston College and I was kind of upset. Was I sort of expecting it?.. yeah. But I thought I had a chance. Take a look at my stats and I have an important question.

Here are my stats…
(I attend a prestigious Jesuit high school in Detroit, MI)
4 years high honors
National Honor Society
Scholar Athlete
I’m white from a middle-class family

GPA: Weighted 3.63

ACT: 27 (superscored 28)

Current Classes:
Honors Biochemistry
Ceramics
World Literature
Social Justice
AP Biology
Honors Pre-calculus
Spanish III

Extra-Curriculars/Service:
4 years varsity ski team (captain)
JV and freshman soccer team
Summer job as a 4-H sail school instructor (40 hours/week for 6 weeks)
Teacher’s aid at an elementary school once a week
one week mission trip to Nicaragua
PB&J ministry (serving food and clothing to the impoverished of Detroit)
Ski instructor
NHS tutor
Spanish club
Piano instructor
Focus: Hope deliverer (same thing as PB&J basically)
(If you want the specific details on any of these, ask. I got lazy)

I had three teacher recommendations sent to BC. One was from a jesuit priest who was a teacher of mine sophomore year and we knew each other well… He also is a current student at BC working on his Ph.D.

I personally thought my essays were pretty well written.

Anyways… (if you’re still reading) I got denied from BC. But in my opinion, college admissions are screwy. A friend of mine was denied by BC but is now a freshman at Georgetown when GT is supposedly “better” than BC… So you never know what might happen.

I just have this pride issue where I need to be above average so when BC didn’t work out I was pretty distraught. I’m applying to other schools like U of M ann arbor (deferred EA), Syracuse, and Marquette. I was thinking about randomly applying to Northeastern or Villanova. I just need the prestige. It’s a big thing to me. Any recommendations? I’m planning on majoring in biochemistry. Are there schools similar to Boston College that will accept me based on my credentials? Where do you think I should go from here?

Northeastern should be a high match for you.

Prestige is relative. Only a few schools (HYPSM, Cal, UCLA, UNCCH, UVa, etc) have universal prestige nationwide/internationally, and you may not get into them.

Penn State is prestigious on the East Coast and is a high match for you. Purdue is a low match. Both are viewed highly by recruiters.

Well I would have said the BC was a reach for you. A 27 is 2 points below the 25th percent which alone makes you a reach but if your weighted GPA is only a 3.6 I must imagine that your unweighted is below that which is very far below their range. It also only looks like you have taken one AP.

Here goes the chances:
U mich RD- Reach
Syracuse- High match
Marquette- High Match
Northeastern- Reach
Villanova- Reach

You might want to look into Boston University, University of Wisconsion (great biochem program), UMass Amherst. None scream prestige but are all great schools. Why do you think prestige is necessary? Also are you really wanting to stay on the east coast or are you open to schools in the south and west coast?
You also need to add some safeties to your list!

You’re right about prestige being relative… For me, BC is a stretch. But for others it’s no big deal. Thanks for the suggestions though!

I know Northeastern has great science programs. Same for Penn State I presume? I’ve never really looked into it.

And is Syracuse basically pointless to go to unless you’re going into communications?

Prestige is just kinda what I’ve grown up with… All my friends are INCREDIBLY smart. Literally all of them have been already been accepted to Notre Dame, BC, UM, and Georgetown. I know I should just worry about myself but whatever haha I’ll like wherever I end up going.

and just to clarify… BC could have worked. I realize my scores were low but coming from a highly credited Jesuit high school gives me a 10% boost. (so acceptance rate from jesuit hs is 39%) plus my recommendations were great and the hours I have of service are off the chain (BC loves service) But it didn’t work out so I’ll live

Also, those were just my senior year classes. I’ve taken challenging classes like that since frosh.
