In search of contemporary contrasting monologues??

I have an audition coming up, and unlucky me, it must be contemporary. I’ve had much luck with poe’s a tell tale heart (I like these crazy things), but that won’t work becaue it’s before the year 1900. I’ve found a piece from the lives of waitresses ( scene about how hard it is to be a waitress), but am in search for others, especially the dark creepy ones like a tell tale heart. I heard for comedic american dreams is good, but i cant find anything about it online.

Thanks for all your help!

Sandy: Its a sad fact, but you are unlikely to get this advice on this page. I swear…People protect the identity of their monologues like corporate trade secrets!

Go on the websites for some of the major play publishers. If you search them, you should find out that they put out these books that tell you all the plays, how many characters are in the play, whether the characters are male or female, and the approximate age of the characters. They also provide you with a summary of the plot. These books will help you hunt for plays that appeal to you, from which you can create monologues that speak to you.

Also, on the internet, they often list the winners of the National High School Speech Competitions. You want to find those that won in the Monologues category. They many times will list the monologue that the winner performed. This is another great source of monologues.

Finally, go to the Young Arts Competition and see what some of the actors have performed in terms of monologues. They have some good suggestions as well. (Someone told me that Young Arts took it down. I don’t know about that. It used to be there.)

Feel free to look for passages that aren’t quite monologues but can be created into them.

Once you find a monologue, don’t forget the cardinal rule…“read the play… know the play… love the play.”
