Inauspicious start - swine flu and robberies

"Carnegie Mellon confirms 26 swine flu cases

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - Carnegie Mellon University has confirmed another eight cases of swine flu, bringing the total number of sick students to 26…"

Add to this the two robberies at gunpoint in the last 10 days - one at 9 in the morning - enough to make me nervous about my S.

It makes me pretty nervous as well. Being cramped together in dorms and using communal bathrooms makes viruses hard to avoid. Also, having to stand at bus stops alone at night for fencing practice makes me a prime target for robberies; so if anyone has an idea for remedying this situation, I’d be glad to hear it.
I would like to say that a lot is being done to avoid H1N1 to the point where announcements and suggestions regarding it are becoming annoying. And campus security is the best I’ve seen anywhere. If you’re worried about your student, know that all of us are in very capable hands, and we aren’t completely helpless on our own either.

Bum car rides from fellow fencers, ask around.
Carry 2 wallets, one decoy and one real.

This is really depressing - it’s getting worse. Now a kid dies in an accident; I can’t imagine how the poor parents must be feeling.

There was also a water main break in the middle of campus last Friday.

What a nice way to start the school year.

The death in the stairwell was actually a suicide jump.
Although, that story could possibly be making up details, cause other recent stories on it include no such details. As a freshman here though, other than these bad events, most are unaffected and having a great time.

Glad to hear that, shufan. Of course as parents, we’re all just at home worrying about you guys and convinced that you’re in constant peril! It’s in our nature.

Robbers Caught…

Absolutely amazing story if indeed true:

What presence of mind that student had! Brilliant.

Marylin, I was just going to post that! Too funny.

It’s a true story, yeah. I don’t think I’d have that kind of presence of mind in that situation. He’s pretty much insanely cool.

That student will have some good talking points in the TOC - and a nice update to his resume.
