Were you being sarcastic, chelsea?

^No, he’s being serious.

Tippu, I believe Harvard, Yale , Princeton, and Dartmouth are the only Ivies that are need blind for all (Yes that is half the Ivy League, but not most). Apart from these four, Amherst and MIT are need blind as well. Just clarifying.

I don’t quite know why we’re getting into this war of words, but anyway, as long as its going on…

The point about it being easy to get into UChicago relative to the Ivy’s: We can go on arguing how that is true or not true, but let me make two points:

This pandering undermines other great institutions because all the attention goes to the ivy league colleges. If you lived here, you’d know: 80% of the people don’t know that the ivy league is simply a sports league. That same majority of the people think ‘Ivy league’ is some sort of a status given to colleges.

Also, I’m not getting an inferiority complex at all. In fact, its quite the opposite. I’m extremely proud of myself. If I had an inferiority complex, I would have applied to Ivys for regular admissions. I’m happy with UChicago.

And for what it’s worth, Tippu, you started the argument. I knew people like you would start attacking a couple of lines I typed, which is why I specified I did not want to start a debate. I simply stated three personal views in my original post, and congratulated chealsearox. You are the one who accused me, and made assumptions. You shouldn’t be telling me to take the high road.

Wall Street has a much higher number of undergraduates from Ross School of Business (UMich) and McIntire School of Commerce(UVA) than from AEM at Cornell. Also, MBAs from Ross and Darden have a major presence in the Wall Street. So, Cornell may not be the right route for landing a job in the Wall Street! No doubt, Cornell is a good school for undergraduate studies. You will enjoy the campus life and the food is really good:)

Dude, 80%? More like 99% :)

UChicago is much better than most Ivys, for example Dartmouth and Brown.

Hey i have come across these statistics [Early-Decision Applications Surge at Vanderbilt, George Washington and Dartmouth - NYTimes.com](Early-Decision Applications Surge at Vanderbilt, George Washington and Dartmouth - The New York Times)… does that mean there will be much lesser chances for regular decision students??

its always been that way Violator.
RD is WAYYY harder than ED.

So if the Indian quota for each college is already filled in ED its basically impossible to get into that college???

Oh, I didn’t know there was an Indian quota too! Is there?
I don’t think there would be one.
If these are colleges that pick the best of the best students then why would they keep an ‘Indian’ quota?

there is no ‘Indian’ quota. Its just the international one. Roughly 8-15% of the total class is reserved for internationals. Within that there is no ‘fixed’ amount for each country. But they try to be as diverse as possible.

And no its definitely not completely filled. I don’t know about others but for Penn it is half (49%) filled. Its done proportionally to the total ED filling. For the class size filled in ED/EA/SCEA/REA check the link Violator posted. Its very comprehensive.

@aniruddhc: Yeah, and its a bit irritating - since its the application season every person you know, and even don’t, including all ‘arnties’ and ‘ancles’ ask you in some form or the other ‘did you get into an ivy league college’. Then I have to explain what ivy league actually is, and that amazing colleges like MIT are not a part of the ivy league, at which they express disbelief… I bet they go home and check it. Seriously, everyone goes like “OMG SERIOUSLY MIT IS NOT AN IVY LEAGUE ???”. Ugh.

I think I would definately include Penn in that list - they have amazing business… but not so much amazing liberal arts. I wouldn’t fit into most ivies anyway… Dart especially, too drink-y and jock-y.

@Violator: i’m pretty sure there’s no quota as of such, but even if there was, which there isnt, they would not fill up the whole quota in early - what if they get better students in regular? Plus, that’s what deferral is for.

goodwood8, ok. I reacted after you had clearly indicated that you didn’t want to start a debate and I am sorry.

Application season is almost over and I felt that there was no point arguing X > Y. I felt a little let down when a fellow uchicago admit started making statements that sounded like whining. That’s all.

I wasn’t really whining as of such… its pretty much my usual complaining :P. Also, I think I came across wrongly, I wasn’t making those statements as much as a UChicago admit as an Indian. The situation is so much worse here. Anyway, didn’t mean any offense to other UChicago admits.

lets leave that topic behind. So… which college are you inclined to attend to currently ?

^ It will finally come down to cost of attendance but I am more or less certain about not wanting to go to CalTech. I don’t think I will be in a position to decide until mid April when most schools make final decision on merit scholarships.

Not CalTech … hmmm …
Tippu, Did you apply CMU SCS?

No. I didn’t.

no to caltech?? hmm bold move.
since its financial, I understand.

Just keep this in mind though; CalTech is one of the schools from which graduating with some debt is not too bad. The starting salaries are wicked especially for a engineering related post.

Starting salary at a high tech company like Amazon for someone fresh out of school with a 4 yr degree in CS is ~ $90k/yr + $20k stock options. Difference between a CalTech and UT-A CS graduate is negligible according to my sources. (Yes, Amazon - the company that sells books online is indeed a high tech company.)

^ I respect you for your attitude towards other colleges. In fact, for your humble nature in general.

Has any Indian on CC gotten into MIT??
