There is no Early Action/Decision at MIT for internationals. How can an Indian already have gotten in?

^ Indian origin and staying in India but has a US passport xD. I know 3 such people.
However all of them were deferred to RD

same, three of my classmates got deferred.

I’m kind of late, but thought I’d join in the fray anyway. I’m looking at Computer Engineering (not Science), and can finance the four years in the even that the few places that I’ve applied to for need-blind aid don’t accept me. My current status is as follows:

Georgia Tech EA - Accepted
UIUC EA - Accepted
University of Michigan - Accepted
Drexel - Accepted

The rest are all RD, which means I have several tense weeks ahead of me. ;)

Welcome thetechnut.

Nice early acceptances, congratulations!

Just to strike conversation, if you were to choose one of the ones you got in early to attend… which one would it be and why ?

Hmm. That’s a tough one. I think I’d have to narrow it down to a choice between Georgia Tech and UIUC. It’s like this - rankings wise, they’re close enough, so I don’t think I’m going to give it that much thought - they’re both not the best, but they’re in the same bracket. At the same time, UIUC is more likely to offer scholarships (Georgia Tech is a strict no-no on both finaid and scholarships as far as I know/am misinformed about). So, probably UIUC.

But that said, I’m chasing bigger fish, like MIT and Stanford, and I’m pretty confident that my profile fits the bill.

P.S. Thanks for the welcome.

^ Why would you discount UMich?

My friend attends UIUC, and he says that international students aren’t eligible for most scholarships. UMich, on the hand, gives a lot of scholarship if you do really well, though don’t mention it on their website. This was another friend who attends UMich.

It’s intriguing how most of the info we know is based on hearsay.

^ To be perfectly honest, I’m hoping to leave the earth-shaking decisions for the post-decision period. Its too early to make a call. Who knows? RD might throw up some stuff that makes the rest pale in comparison. Besides, I only answered the question because goodwood8 brought it up.

Thetechnut- Would you say Georgia Tech is better than Umich if financial aid is not a factor??
So basically you are this 2300+ sat score student(inferring from your statement " I fit the profile for MIT and Stanford?)

Violater - I’ll answer both your questions.

1) I haven’t been to either of the colleges. But I have a friend who graduated from Georgia Tech last year, and he said its a pretty good place. Once again, I’ll reiterate my stand that I tend to bracket colleges into categories and then compare them. As of now, I think that Georgia Tech, UIUC and UMich fall somewhat in the same category. The reason I can say this with confidence is because if you compare them to the next “level” of colleges, the distinction can be very clearly drawn.

2) I have a cumulative SAT score of 2230, so no, I don’t fall into the “2300+ SAT” bracket.
However, I don’t (and you shouldn’t either) define yourself by your scores or grades. It’s a different matter that I have done well on all the tests that I’ve written. But ultimately, they remain figures. I’ve done ECAs in a variety of topics and excelled in some way or the other in most of them. The breadth of skills covered includes, but is not limited to, event management and scientific research. This, combined with my passion for knowledge (and its dissemination) in general and computer engineering in particular, which I am able to put down well in my essays, means that I’ve somewhat confident about my applications. At the same time, I do understand that statistics are against me, and that international student quotas will limit my chances of getting into good places. For example, MIT takes in approximately 100 international undergrad freshmen each year. The subset of Indians in this is pretty low. It doesn’t usually hit double digits. I accept that reality and am prepared for the worst in March. Nevertheless, I believe I’ve put my best foot forward and hope for the best, just like we all should.

Hope this answers your questions.

UM=GT=UIUC. From thereon, you need to decide where YOU want to go! {location, cost, weather, etc}

And no one, absolutely no one, should be confident that their “profile fits the bill” for an HYPSM

^ Agree with the first point.

As for the second, I guess I should re-phrase my earlier statement. What I meant was that I’m pretty confident about what I’ve done so far, based on the time, opportunities and obstacles presented to me. College apps let you introspect into what you’ve accomplished up till this point in your life like nothing else (as I’m sure that many people have realized). So, I’ll agree with you that HYPSM will always be unpredictable. But I can say that even if I walk away with no call from any one of the HYPSM, I won’t be agonizing over it.

I actually fell in the trap of that same assumption. I thought I very well “fit the bill” for Swarthmore. Loved each bit of that place and they rejected me. I thought I didnt stand a chance to get into UChicago, and I got in. I would go to the extent to include AWS in with HYPSM although its not relevant in this discussion.

AWS is Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore?

Anyway, Congrats on the UChicago acceptance goodwood8!

@goodwood8 - Which courses interest you at the moment? I’m assuming you’re a high school senior.

UChic is freaking awesome. CONGRATS!!

I just love the intellectual feelings of Swarthmore. And 5/6 of their premeds get into med school. That is an extremely large amount.

while a admire your confidence ‘thetechnut’ i just want to say that its better to not say anything and get in than say a lot and then not. As Anirudh said, no one fits an ‘HYPSM’ its just a case of who fits it more than the other applicants. SO you can’t judge your chance unless you have seen all the other applications inside out.

Best of Luck though

@thetechnut, you are a cool dude. I like your style.

DreamsUnlimited, I don’t understand why you are offended by my comment. I am a parent and I thought thetechnut expressed his source of confidence really well. I have nothing to do with thetechnut and if you don’t believe it then that’s your problem.

This is in response to post #180.

@UnitCircle - No offence, but I have several questions to ask you. Will you mind to answer those?

Why is this your first post and you are praising a person with no more than 8 posts?

Usually when someone starts his CC journey, he says “hello everyone”, “hi” or “what are my chances?”, but you started with “you are a cool dude. I like your style.” Why?

@CC Audience - Is this a fake ID made by technut or technut is actually a COOL DUDE?
