What is SPA 101?

I know that it’s a course, but of what, and where?

spanish 101 @ pton…i’ll surely bring up your query about misleading translation in my class…

ok i dont wanna stop your conversation…!
but i was wondering what you guys think about this
umm…i’ve got into berkely amherst and waitlisted at columbia
(doing eco)
as of now im going to amherst because there giving me a crazy 36000$$
aid package
but not considering the aid…what would you all do??

And Yes, remember to quote my name as well. :-)

shabin, will do…

confused, dont know much about amherst’s or berk’s econ program, so not the best judge - but ofcourse if cola comes thru than thats the better ones…so w/o fin aid

 1. columbia
 2. berk
 3. amherst

but having been in a similar situation before and after thinking about it a whole lot…$36k is a good chunk of change…if you take the opportunity cost of almost Rs. 74 lacs into account from a net present value (where a rupee is worth Re. 1 today and 0.95 paisa next year because of inflation+interest cost) you will realize that the marginal difference between amherst and berk might not be offsetting…and your personal attributes could easily overcome those small differences…so in that event…i’d go with amherst
my two cents…for whats it worth

omg confused!!!

columbia is THE best for econ, no qn. about it!

how much do you really like econ? r u a daad at econ? maths?

if you LOVE econ and can do RIGOROUS work , go to berk, if econ is what you got into at berk. MAN, berkeley is just fantastic at econ. just thinking about it makes my spine tingle with awe and fascination! if you cant handle tough econ, DON’T go to berkeley, you’ll get chewed out! +, berk is one univ which is good at EVERY subject. for a state school, you cant beat that!

Ya, Berkeley is wicked…caution and attend at your own risk…even GE classes are competitive. It is #3 in top Econ programs (USnews ranking). Although this is graduate school ranking, it very well reflects the school’s program. Columbia is not on the list but has a good reputation.

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/phdhum/brief/ecorank_brief.php</a></p>

And Berk is not a state school. It is a public institution.

amherst in absolutely BRILLIANT

i know atleast 8 people at amherst, and all of them are having an incredible time.

if their giving you the money- go for it!!

indie boy: what’s the difference between a state school and a public institution?

i thought berkeley was a state school, the flagship of the uc system.

and com’on, columbia not mentioned for econ!!!

Berkeley is a state school

guesswhoiam, here is a copy and paste I got…

Public Universities: These are state-affiliated institutions that are publicly-supported (financed by public taxes) and they’re usually large in size. They normally offer all levels of degrees and many different fields of study. Public colleges and universities are relatively inexpensive for residents of the state where the schools are located (since they’re funded in large part by state tax revenues).

state university or state college is one of the colleges or universities in the state (or territorial) university system. There are no federally-run colleges or universities in the United States other than the United States military academies. State universities usually offer lower tuition costs to in-state residents, as they are funded by state tax dollars.

State colleges are usually in the lower tier schools. Never the less, very valuable for local students.

nomad, berkeley is not a state school…

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/natudoc/natudoc_pub_brief.php</a></p>

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/directory/brief/drglance_1312_brief.php</a></p>

for more info

That being said, sometimes, in the US, we call the state univ like CSU system as public. I think the state univz don’t offer Doctorate degree.

Off topic, any news from the IIT test takers? When are the results coming out ?

astrix, merc, adides and such…look at this!!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=55805</a></p>

indie boy, a state school is a public school atleast here in your neighbouring state Arizona. Arizona state and Uniersity of arizona are prime examples.

Read the last two lines of both the definitions. Anyway you probably took the literal meaning of the word “state”. Anyway UC schools are controlled by the state and funded by state taxes. And i believe you cant collect any other “taxes” in a state. SO i have excellent reason to believe that your “public” taxes are indeed the same as state taxes.

What was the point of you showing me USNews websites anyway?

nomad, the point of the USnews website…

1st link - Berk’s name is in the Top Public National Universities list…Thus, it must be a public univ.
2nd link - In the general information section it says “Public institution”. Thus, it must be a public univ.

So my point was to support my claim that it is a public institution.

I dont want to argue over state vs. public. If you want to call it a state school then go ahead…

indie_boy: IIT results come out on April 28th - no NO ONE dare ask for my result :p

gandalf:  good grief… now i’m afraid to even post a thank you note there

hehe great going guys (adi, such, astrix, merc) you guys really have great attitudes :D

I wonder how great you guys would be to meet in person ;)

stop wonderin bout it cause i think that we are gonna meet real soon! somehow!

are we? I didn’t know that
