LONG LIVE TiT!!!

Hey flame, I beg to disagree with some of the things you said.

Firstly, I don’t think the world is divided into nerds and cool people. In fact, majority of the guys whom I’ve seen do well in academics are pretty cool and well-versed with whats going on around them. Yeah, we know that you know someone who has a penchant for wearing shorts up to his nipples and travels with his mummy on the buses, but he’s an exception. There are many smart (and studious) kids who enjoy a game of basketball, who can crack the funniest jokes, find time to read fiction, attend every single party they’re invited to, etc. etc. I don’t think these kids will have any problem adapting to life in the US.

You seem to have gotten it into your head that studies=waste of time. That’s because you look at studies as the means to an end. If I’m not wrong, you plan to pursue a career in the field of economics/commerce, where, charming clients might help a lot. You probably won’t have to remember quadratic equations to do well then. But, there are people on this board who want to graduate, post-graduate and then do research, meaning, they will be studying for, umm…let’s say, the rest of their lives. These people will not find charm and etiquette writing a thesis for them later in life. Yeah…Of course they will need a a basic amount of social ability to move along with the people around them, but that’s that. These people need to start, and keep studying, because its their job. And for these people, studies do not remain “studies”, its something they will have enjoy doing.

I mean, you’ve reached a stage where you don’t need to study for the sake of studying any more. If you like the stuff you are studying now, you can continue, or drop it altogether if you don’t. Now, you learn what you want to - nothing’s forced on you anymore. And since you’re learning the things you want to, it follows that you are enjoying what you are learning, and so, studies=enjoyment.

All I’m saying is that don’t categorize life into having fun and studying. They are not exclusive things.

I’m sorry, but I lost track of what I wanted to exactly say :D. I’m posting this bcos I don’t want to see half -an- hour’s worth work going waste. I’ll get back to you when I’ve organized my thoughts a bit more. Don’t go away !

No gandalf, that’s pretty well organized. :)

but ‘shorts upto their nipples’ LOL :D

Premanjali - Siddharth who? Your arch nemesis Saha? How did he find out? Or is it his idea of a suprememly funny joke? (which obviously he knows you’ll fall for)

i agree with gandalf… am not sayin wat flame said was wrong…yeah social skills are imp, but i feel flame went a bit to extremes… shrugs

Gandalf

I agree with you that there could be a good balance between work-fun and most of us manage to find that balance, depending on our aspirations

I think a lot of it depends on our social setting and family background
in Bombay (esp. in gujju families that flame and I come from) I have normally witnessed more emphasis on living it up
when my parents call me during board exams
they not only ask me how the exams went, but also about what are the fun things I did since the last call (and I better have a good answer for that question!)
now, when I call my friends on the eve of an exam to see if they want to take a break and join me for dinner, I am labeled as the devil by their families because they come different background and have different aspirations

In short, everything is good. Everybody is an individual, who live their OWN life the way they deem fit… our empathy goes to the dozens of kids that we know, who literally have been holed up in their study room their whole life and have never experienced this side of life but meh . Maybe that is what some of them wants good for them . while most of us continue to be the devil who love to live it up :p

i dont agree with flame’s comment on
“im not implying that we all stop studying all together and become pot smoking hippie’s”

hell…why not??? :p

OMG!

<a href=“Page not found : IIT Delhi”>Page not found : IIT Delhi;

not sure if it works, but if it does…

so merc whats ur reg # and DOB??? i’ll check it for u…

phew… it doesnt. :D

It says reg no. _______ not in our database! Does that mean anything?

Anyway, when do you think the results will actually be put up? I’m sure it won’t be exactly at 8:00 as they say…I dunno, somehow 8 am doesn’t seem the right time to declare crucial results :p

hmmmph. I should think not. I have better things to do at 8 am tomorrow :)

last year i checked at 10 i think…

oh yeah…i completely forgot such ‘wrote’ the exam as well… or more like doodled n drew her way thru! lol

gd luck merc, shashank and others who sat for it!!

sighs that is such a sweet email… :(

Dear xxx,

The time is coming, as you must be aware, minute by minute, when you must make your decision about a college. Or perhaps you have made the decision and are waiting until midnight on May 1 to tell us. Do you realize how nervous that makes us all? You probably do…

We thought today about you running to the mailbox on May 1, a Sunday, only to discover that the person who postmarks your letter isn’t working that night, and we wondered if you would then mail the letter on Saturday, or even Friday, and decided that it would be best if our deadline became Monday, May 2.

So, have your reply postmarked May 2 or earlier (earlier would be very nice), and all our nerves will be calmed.

We do hope that you decide to attend xxx, and we do wish you well no matter what you decide.

These are the “cool” people flame is talkin about… :D

adides, ALL major colleges have extended their deadlines to May 2 because May 1 is a sunday
dont feel too warm…

adides, if you will be so courteous as to get a yahoo account, we will invite you to the little TiT gathering we’re having now…

yeah…i was looking more at “Do you realize how nervous that makes us all? You probably do…” …i called the adcom @ this uni. to tell her that i wont be attending…and after all the phone/email conversations…we were kid of ‘buddies’ (like an adcome-applicant buddies…but we had the same favorite tv show, book, author, etc.) and i just felt bad that i had to tell her “uh…thanks…but no thanks…”
