Son deferred today to RD. Competitive stats that almost qualified for DA to Kelly. They requested an additional essay to take them up on their “offer”.
They never used the word “deferred”, but it seems clear that is what it means based on the process they describe. Not sure what an essay would tell them at this point. Seems like a “moving the goalpost” process that gives a negative impression compared to the process experienced with other schools.
Honest non-judgmental question- would you rather just be denied? Seems another essay is part demonstrating interest and tiebreaker efforts. But that’s just my read. I think most schools would just deny you and not provide the opportunity. Rather than deciding the negative impact it’s possible to see it as positive opportunity.
Yes. At 9 this evening. Same prompt if you applied directly to the IU rather thank the Common App portal that didn’t allow for the answer to that prompt only allowed for the personal statement. My son had sent an email with an answer to the prompt as additional information directly to our rep for NJ and was told they consider the additional email unless it was in the online application. A little frustrating to say the least. Well I guess now we know and they waiting game continues.
no i 100% am taking this opportunity to give it my best shot. iu is my top choice and i’m thrilled that they r even giving me a chance and hearing me out i’d write a lot of essays to even slightly help my chances more. i’m very grateful i wasn’t denied.
My son applied EA everywhere. He has received an equal number of deferrals to acceptances. Deferrals all came from state schools. Only one school denied him - and it was a relief. We no longer have to think about them and do anything for them.
does anyone know if changing ur major after being deferred makes u look bad. i general made a mistake and thought that a major i wanted was part of kelley but i was told it’s in o’neill and i got deferred but will i look bad if i change it now. i genuinely am wanting to do this major and would change from kelley to the o’neaill school if i got in anyways. does anyone have any thoughts?
I would call admissions and ask. Don’t say you erred in which school to apply. That’s a bad look and shows poor preparation from you. State your interest changed. See what they say in regards to allowing a change. They will or they won’t (I suspect they won’t) but you have to ask to find out. You also want to check intro university transfers to see how easy it is to transfer in should you get into the ‘wrong’ school at IU. It might end up IU isn’t for u.
I can confirm this. We are in CA and after being in a CA highschool during covid my son said “I want the hell out of here for college”. He’s applying almost exclusively to southern schools and other schools that didn’t impose heavy lockdowns/mandates, because nothing predicts future behavior like past precedent. We have not forgotten what we went through.
In state daughter just got accepted into O’neill. 3.74 weighted, average ECs, honors diploma and I think 5 APs, but like everyone we have been full of stress this weekend. I hope others get the good news. I really appreciated this group- especially @jefrobertson- you kept me off the edge this weekend. Really appreciate all the time and insight you put into the group.
wait sorry- I think 3.71 when she submitted (10/1), she got it up last semester. Sorry- I just know I was hanging on to every stat I could while waiting so thought it might help someone if they’re right on the edge
