Indiana University - Bloomington Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Average merit is around $8k per student - reach that number you are probably done. IU will not generally inform you that you did not receive aid so the “did anyone hear yet” game is excruciating from now until mid-March. Odds are very very high - you will not receive anything more than Dean’s/Provost.

Deleted.

My senior already received $8k and asking current IU students she was told something similar about there not being much hope to getting more. So she opted not to write two more essays of 1000 words each especially since there is no transparency about what is on the table and the chances of getting it. I think it’s ridiculous the hoops schools want students to jump through after they’ve already put in so much work in their classes, ECs and on the applications. The entire process is frustrating. Another school is requiring a 250 word essay and is very up front that only one student will get it and also upfront about how much the scholarship is worth. We need to see more of this every where. Also, the letters of continued interests for deferred students is another annoyance. Just review what they already sent you, if they mark that they want to continue to be considered take that as continued interest. These kids need a break and they also want to focus on what they are currently involved in not to keep hacking away at something that has a very low chance of pay off at this point.

I’m not sure there are many schools with transparency on chances to receive. Some will tell you how many of certain scholarships exist.

Schools are a business and they want to know if you actually care or if you just filled out the common app. Especially IU as it is a lot of people’s safety. Even in the high stat Kelley direct admit world.

I get kids are busy, I don’t think IU really cares that much about that. They care to see if you are going to attend before they award you more money. At any State school especially OOS you are not likely to receive significant merit to attend. Schools used to send $2-4k to everyone and now IU and others are focusing on sending $8-10 to some. They do have their small group of students that they really want to entice to attend but out of 7k or something it’s probably 100 students.

We were told by Kelley correctly or incorrectly that applying for JLLC as early as possible is important. I have zero knowledge on how IU housing works.

DS admitted on 1/9 and received physical mail this week from IU with confirmation of his $8k per year merit. Also received a separate physical letter from Luddy with additional $3k per year scholarship (and stickers for his keyboard). If Luddy scholarship had been mentioned in an email earlier, we can’t find it -so that was a nice surprise and helps narrow the gap between UC in-state and IU OOS.

Congrats. Interesting that my son got the exact same scholarship awards for Luddy CS - OOS CA.

daughter is direct admit to Kelley and Huttons. Her Deans scholarship is 3k/year. She has applied for more scholarships through regular application and couple of specific ones which they recommended. What will increase her chance of getting these scholarships?

IU doesn’t provide any information about how they select merit amounts.

Likely use analytics on the prior year packages and college freshman GPAs for students coming from your student’s high school school. This would help them understand what level of merit is likely to yield an acceptance and how those students perform once at IU. Believe they also look beyond that for leadership in ECs.

OOS DD Kelly DA has received $8k so far. Hoping for more out of scholarship process but realize it’s not very likely.

I believe it is mostly GPA driven - my 2 boys have similar test scores but one has a better GPA - one received $2k/yr and the higher GPA $6k/yr.

Would not increase chances no. Im not saying IU stops intentionally at 8-10k but that its the average amount so if you have that it’s right where most who receive aid are. Some receive more and some less. People way over analyze merit aid at big schools- not public schools’ jam because it messes up budgets.

Not completely true for some OOS schools in the south. We live in Atlanta, and our b/g twins received $15K and $11K / year for 4 years to Auburn based solely on GPA/ACT scholarship matrix. Unfortunately for myself and wife, it looks like full OOS tuition to IU for our son, and maybe a few $ for our daughter who is also headed OOS to Clemson Honors College.

In-state at UGA or GT would have been nice with proceeds from the GA Lottery funding full tuition for any in-state student as long as they maintain a 3.0 for all 4 years, however, our daughter’s 3.9 UW, 33 ACT got her deferred, and our son didn’t bother applying with his 3.6 UW, 32 ACT bc he had no chance.

That’s exactly what I am saying. IU has its gpa test money. Many publics do. The rest is for a very small group of students. Very small.

Apologies. I misread what you were referring to.

We received invitation for “Hoosier Scholar Celebration” on 20th March in NY city and we will be attending it. Along with learning about IU, I am hoping to be nice networking event for my daughter.

Do they ever publish how many SSA applicants actually receive funds? i.e. Approx how many of the kids are invited to SSA, and of that what percent who submit ever get something…?

will regular decision release in batches as well or just in mid march

My DD applied in the last week of December and got decision last week

S24 received the same invite to a Scholars event in Chicago. Does anyone have first hand experience with this type of meeting? Who does IU send to represent the school and what kind of presentation do they put on?

Maybe I don’t follow your question but IU sends various admissions or leader reps from the University in general and various colleges within the University, some alums and some students. Who attends is based on location, maybe someone is from an area and goes to that one versus another and proximity to IU. Some refreshments, mingling and presentation/pictures if you want to take them. I ask maybe I’m confused because this seems pretty obvious. They put these on because it’s a touch point for yield.
