Indiana University - Bloomington Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

We’re signed up for the Chicago Scholars one. I’d be interested in the answer to this too.

They don’t publish total stats. Hutton does once in awhile and that’s maybe 10% of the admits receive money from Hutton. SSA is a generalized application process funneling into private and IU based awards so the stats aren’t that easy to collate or many even public - educated guess knowing IU pretty darn well - 95% of the SSA applicants get zero maybe higher. I’ve been told Arts&Sciences has the highest hit rate as it’s the broadest over many majors with the least super high stat kids and Kelley has the most highest qualified applicants so the hit rate there is the lowest. There’s always a lot of annoyance at SSA for its lack of awards that I don’t really understand.

Appreciate the color as it is. I am trying to convince my son to sign up, but he seems to think there is nothing new the school can tell him to make him like it more than he already does. Unless the reps will touch on scholarship opportunities for the Scholars, I am not going to win this argument.

Thanks, that’s what I figured. Was a lot of work for likely no gain.

So much will I get something if I attend or it’s not worth my time - not in judgment here but such a common response.

These events are about networking, meeting people, hearing about IU because they want you to attend. Teenagers and their lack of interest in advice…

Scholarships are not granted by meeting someone at an event and having them call scholarship office and say give this person money. Most of these events are probably well after scholarships are awarded anyway. Signing up might be demonstrated interest for a scholarship but it’s not going to come from you being at the meeting.

Kelley is a lot about networking if anyone is Kelley - that’s reason enough to attend. The more practice the better for any major honestly. IMO.

There’s a similar event in Washington DC. Trying to decide if we should attend

One of the things my kid wanted in a school was that she would be able to go anywhere and say, “I’m a _____ (Hoosier)” and people would generally know that and say “so am I” or “my child went there” or “my best friend is also a Hoosier”… a good alumni network across the country and positive feels from the brand name.

I think events like this show that aspect to the kids. Plus it’s a party in your child’s honor. Isn’t that all good?

Not if it interferes with a lunch with the girlfriend😂

They held one the other night, I wouldn’t say objectively it looks cool or fun unless you are in to hanging out with adults in IU Admissions or Administration. I’d personally make my kid attend but she wouldn’t be happy about it.

S24 and I attended a Scholars event in Ft Lauderdale last night. About a dozen IU representatives from admissions and academic departments including Kelley. The first 20-30 minutes involved informal breakout Q&A, with the Kelley representative being by far the most popular individual in the room. I’d guess over half of the 60+ attendees were Kelley candidates. The next 20 minutes was a presentation from the scholarship dept, making a pitch for attending IU. And the final 20, more informal Q&A. My son had already toured IU and is familiar with what IU/Kelley has to offer, but he still found the session useful and he’s glad he attended.

I was impressed to learn that about 30 of these receptions are/will be held across the country. IU puts a lot of resources into recruiting newly admitted students. I don’t see the competitor schools (S24 is admitted to 3 other Big 10 business schools) going to these lengths.

Are the cities where these are being held published anywhere?

I haven’t seen a list. Perhaps if you reach out to the office of scholarships they can tell you more:

OOS dollars…it’s a smart strategy for them.

Did you or your son learn anything new about IU or Kelley that you did not know already?

I found this on their site if any of the locations are near you:

There was nothing substantive that he hadn’t already known or heard. But with so much info to take in, repetition is helpful.

My oldest is an IU sophomore and an IU Scholar. We attended the Chicago IU Scholars event in 2022, and it really made an impact. There were helpful breakout sessions, which were small and well done, but the real benefit was my kid felt so celebrated and special. Balloon arches, hot cocoa bar, freebies, desserts, small plates, etc. It’s a nice, festive event that made us all feel the Hoosier spirit. During a breakout session, one of the student ambassadors recognized and approached my kid, saying, “Hey! Weren’t you in my summer tech camp class?” (Which had been remote, even!) I think that conversation sealed the deal on IU vs. the original “first choice” school. This girl remembered my usually-in-the-background student all those months later. It made IU feel like a place where students could have a small school within a big school.

Great story. That’s exactly what my D24 would be looking for. She’s going with my husband, so this is excellent news.

I hope she enjoys it — these kids work so hard for so long, and as parents there are many years of worrying, hoping we’re raising them well and doing our best for them. These celebratory moments are nice.

Is anyone attending the Direct Admit days? We are going for the February dates but haven’t received any additional info after the confirmation.
