I think you are answering your own question “on or before Jan 15”. IU would like to get closer to that Jan 15, but it’s a hard transition. And @tsbna44 is the real contributor and expert you should all thank - always good advice that I read and enjoy.
Scale is definitely a large part of the answer, but I think it’s highly likely that Kelley suffers competitively with kids who are also looking at a bunch of schools that are higher on the eliteness scale generally. IU’s a great academic institution, and Kelley is seen in the larger world as competitive with most of the “top” undergraduate business programs, but the larger university is not generally in competition with Penn and Vandy, etc., so Kelley has trouble with kids looking for a prestige factor. Especially if the kid in question is from one of the coasts. Bloomington’s great and the IU campus is gorgeous, but it’s in the middle of Indiana, which just naturally doesn’t appeal to a pretty large swath of the population.
Witness this very thread. I haven’t seen a single set of GPA and test scores in 100+ posts that won’t easily be admitted to the University easily, most of them hit the direct to Kelley numbers. Leaving aside the merit seekers and families who aren’t in position to send their kids to private universities, I would wager a lot of the collections of stats above are also applying to much more “elite” schools, and would only consider IU for Kelley, and then only if they don’t get into any of the more selective places.
Adding a slightly more “normal high achiever” entry to the list. S25 submitted this week. He’s got about the equivalent of a 3.7 (school’s on a 1-100 grading scale; will finish around the 40th percentile at a competitive but not outlandishly competitive/elite Jesuit high school with pretty minimal grade inflation compared to other schools we’ve seen) and submitted a 30 ACT. So he hits one of the two Kelley direct admit qualifications, but will have to petition. Given his high school’s long track record of students at the university and in Kelley (we’re out of state but in the Midwest, and IU’s probably the most common out of state public school choice at his school), that might help.
Personally, however, even if he doesn’t get in through a petition process, we’d be very pleased if he ended up at IU. He has the academic chops to earn his way into Kelley as a sophomore. But regardless, there are a number of excellent programs at O’Neill and Lugar in addition to A&S, many of which are sort of business-adjacent; the alumni base is tremendous; the campus is amazing; the student body seems extremely happy and seems a great fit for our kid.
My son is a Kelley standard admit from a prominent Chicago Jesuit school. Would love to be a resource for you if needed. My D25 is applying as well (not to Kelley).
How does your son like Kelley School of Business? My D25 already applied. She is supposed to be a Direct Admit but in the portal, it says “in progess”.
He’s really liking it. He was definitely well prepared coming from our high school and took finite over the summer. Definitely need to get involved.
My son is an in-state applicant looking to major in Political Science at the College of Arts & Science at IU. IU is his #1 choice, so we are not enjoying being patient - ha! He meets the Direct Admissions criteria on the website for CAS (barely meeting the SAT requirement), so we are crossing our fingers that all goes well. We are hopeful to hear something sooner vs. later. He applied 8.1.
A little confused. Got info to create login for portal (which uses email for login). There was also a link to create computing IU account. When logging into that account (using username), it says no application found but rest of the info is there (under profile). Where do we check for app status update - the portal (where you use email) or the other one (where you have a username)?
IUB is trying to get away from early apps and early admissions. On apps they want people taking into the early part of their senior year rather than applying in summer so they offer a better picture of who the applicant is into senior year. More importantly they want to create excitement and energy from the admissions closer to visit days and who is serious on coming to IUB. Things change but anything earlier than late Nov would be outside of current plan and it may be closer into Dec/Jan.
Based on last year, Jefro is the expert in this thread. He knows his stuff.
@jefrobertson - Thank you for the insight, it is appreciated. Before he even applied we set expectations that it would be December/January, but the anticipation is a killer. LOL. He’s been accepted with merit to several schools, but IU is “the one” in his eyes (and ours too).
There is direct admit for CAS?
I wish Jefro was in every college thread - calm, steady information.
Yes - you can be a direct admit to the College of Arts and Science.
Direct Admit criteria
You will be offered direct admission to the College if:
You’ve been admitted to IU Bloomington, and you indicated a major in the College of Arts and Sciences on your application for admission. This includes majors within all departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and our College exploratory major.
You earned a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
You earned an ACT composite score of at least 26 or an SAT score of at least 1240 in math and evidence-based reading and writing. Or, if you’re a test-optional applicant, direct admission to the College is based on your performance in academic coursework, extracurricular activities, personal achievements, and the quality of your application essay.
My daughter’s application is in & complete, and she intends to apply to the Hutton Honors College. On the Hutton app, it lists a Jan 1 deadline - but the Hutton website says to apply by Nov 15 for “priority review.” Does anyone have any insight into how much it helps to submit in time for priority review? She has a few other deadlines in mid-Nov and early Dec, so it would be nice to push this out a bit if it doesn’t make much difference.
(If it matters: 4.0/UW, 4.73/W, 1470 (720 Math/750 English), AP Scholar w/Distinction (completed 5 APs and taking 3 more), Nat’l Merit Semifinalist. OOS and applying to Exercise Science program.)
I’m not sure IUB or Hutton even really knows what it means as to the phrase - but it means “early action.” Not they’ll give it more consideration or easier to get in.
Stats - a lot of kids have good stats as here so maybe. Which isn’t personal. They don’t care about the AP scores or really NMS. Will care about the ECs especially beyond student leadership and the essay/statement telling a clear cohesive story about why Hutton. Without auto entry it probably gets easier to get into Hutton than in prior years. All colleges want to know in all admissions - do you present as someone who will succeed and stay. It’s not solely about worthiness - parents (not directed at poster) really want a rubric if I score this will I get in - Hutton is expressly getting away from that.
Thank you for your feedback! This sounds consistent with other schools’ honors colleges/programs - not as much of a numbers game as admissions can sometimes be. I don’t consider a more holistic review (whether it’s “will this kid succeed/stay” or “does this kid really want to engage with the community or are they just in it for the prestige”) either good or bad - it’s just helpful to know so we can manage expectations.
As for timing - sounds like it isn’t a prefence or priority in terms of acceptance. That’s helpful - she’s having some essay fatigue (as I’m sure many kids are experiencing!) so it’ll be nice not to have to squeeze this in before Nov 15.
Thanks again!
Hi,
My daughter is applying for the direct admit. Not sure if she is eligible. We are Out of State, Her UW GPA is 3.4 but Weighted is 4.5. SAT is 1370. Lots of AP classes. Exchange Program student and lots of Leadership and Volunteering work. She has submitted her application on 10/27. Not sure if her Counselor will submit her official transcripts by November 1st. If she doesnt she will not be considered as an EA?
It’s best to go to their website to check your specific question. I think different schools have a different Direct Admit criteria. For example, Kelley School of Business has a higher requirement than their Arts and Sciences. As far as I know, Kelley has a 3.8 UW GPA and Arts and Sciences has a 3.5. Good luck.
Did this change on your end? It’s been 24 hours and showing no application.
