How does all of this align with what I have been reading from those “in the know” that IU does not admit by major? Because I agree it does seem that IU took the pre business major into consideration when deferring so many people this year.
How does that reconcile with what they state on their website: Admission Paths: How to Apply: Office of Admissions: Indiana University Bloomington
"The 12 schools at IU offer different pathways for you to begin studying in your chosen major. Each path is designed to provide the best academic experience and support for students.
If you are admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated a major on your application that is within one of the schools below, you will be directly admitted to the school/College to begin your studies in your major program of interest at the start of your freshman year and have an academic advisor in the school."
That is what we have historically heard too, but I think IU may have to pivot a bit this year. From my friend’s Guidance Counselor email I saw (I’m trying to help their family navigate all this), IU admissions told the GC they are figuring out what to do about the increased demand for competitive majors and are being cautious about over enrolling. We’ve had kids or have known numerous kids going through the IU admissions process for several years now and haven’t seen the IU deferrals in past years like we have this year. Will be interesting to see how it works out.
I think it’s because the “schools” they were referring to did not include business (aka Kelley). If you read down a little further it discusses Kelley.
OOS son who was notified of his DA to Kelly on 1/16 (one of the last batches to be notified)
finally got his Dean’s Scholarship!
“My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.”
This is a common myth at lots of schools. List your major as French and you’ll have an easier time of getting admitted. Wouldn’t it be great if all the time and money spent to get into a college was as easy as choosing a random zero demand major?
Idk. My junior did a rotary exchange to France. Maybe we take advantage of that one
did you mean this response for me? If so this is surprising coming from you. I have followed this forum for years Jeff and usually really respect your input, but there is zero reason to be so dismissive about my comment. While I don’t post a lot, I am not unaware of the college admissions process and IU. I have no idea how it will turn out this year or what the decisions will end up being. All I’m sharing is what the Director of our HS’s Guidance Counseling Department is telling some students after speaking directly to Kelley admissions about a record-number of deferred business students this year and why. I read the email myself; this is not second-hand. There was actually more in the email about what they think could happen that I did not share here. Perhaps the GC’s info is incorrect – time will tell, but it all does happen to line up with what we have been seeing personally with several kids, which is obviously anecdotal (I prefaced this as such in my own post). There is a big perception in our area of Indiana, that IU is a pretty easy acceptance. Some kids were blind-sided this year (rightly or wrongly), and I am just trying to make people aware that they should not take this for granted and that pre-business might be an OK result. It’s a numbers game and things can change with colleges from year-to year - as the numbers change. My kid is a DA this year, so I’m not upset just trying to provide context for what some students are experiencing this cycle.
There was nothing wrong with your post, and I believe most people appreciate it. Extrapolating your post to mean what you never meant isn’t on you.
Don’t withhold info from other parents because an individual, no matter their position, has hurt your feelings. This board is for the people who are applying, your info may help THEM.
Thx
I appreciate your post. Kids and parents are better informed by posts like yours. IU is just one University among many and apparently some in this board are too passionate and snobby about it and can’t tolerate any open discussion. Most posters /readers here want to be informed without any bias, so your post is welcome.
It was a Ferris Bueller quote about rumors that always makes me laugh dating my age and a statement that wouldn’t it be amazing that instead of all this analysis and worry the secret is pick a no demand major and after admittance immediately change to pre-business or whatever you actually want to do.
Thats it - literally the post. I figured i would offend pre-French aspirants not you. .
Sorry you took it differently it was meant as written - literal. I don’t take anonymous message boards into my feelings. I do enjoy self-laughing at 80s movie quotes whenever possible. I also like the idea of my kid not studying for APUSH while being admitted to Harvard by listing a random major. Go Hoosiers.
I think that this year’s admission to specific schools is different than the past. Last spring/fall there were direct admission standards for the college of Arts and sciences, but that information is now gone.
And the international kids are still waiting to hear about their EA decisions… Go Hoosiers!
My older child is a sophomore at Kelley so we were not planning on going to the DA day. However, I just read above that the best shot at an ACE invitation is to register for DA day in March. Anyone know if that is accurate? Still waiting to hear from Hutton but would love for my daughter to have an opportunity for ACE invite. Appreciate any insight anyone can share.
Admitted 1/15 - If we have not received a letter in the mail with merit info should I assume we are not getting any?
Also - does everyone receive a “direct admit” and if not what advantages does this have if any?
Thank you
Direct admit at any school means you are admitted to the major you want.
If you are not direct admit, you will have to meet a set of requirements to try and get your major later.
But you have risk of never getting your major in this case.
So you take a chance of attending if you have your heart set on a major vs attending a direct admit program.
thank you!
There should an email notifying merit aid a few weeks following admit notification. It will show in the application portal.
Regarding Direct Admit, assuming you meant Kelley Direct Admit, the advantage is you are confirmed as a Kelley major. You can either qualify as an Auto Direct Admit (gauranteed if you meet the criteria), or through a petition process (competitive, and there’s consensus that it would be really hard this year).
If you don’t get a direct admit, and still chose to enroll as a pre-business student, you need to meet a certain GPA criteria to qualify for a Kelley major (which is tough with weed out classes, and you may read about it on admissions site).
thank you very much!
