They are easy able to get in during standard admit. It is very doable for freshman.
Iād be complaining to my high school. Why donāt they print gpa?
I know a kid who is currently enrolled and did get Kelley admit via standard admit. Yes, it doable but definitely not easy and is stressful till you make it even for high achieving kids⦠All it takes is one bad course with less than B. There were also few who did not make it as per him. So, definitely doable but have to work hard and be consistent till you get in.
What is his gpa? Iām surprised he got a deferral to IUB if he is low 1400ās.
Donāt essays play a role in admission? If an applicant has spectacular grades but essays that donāt stand out, wouldnāt that affect his or her admission? Perhaps one school puts more emphasis on ECs and essays, while another looks at grades more that ECs and essays.
My son just got a Presidential Scholarship to U Miami, he applied EA to Herbert Business BUT heās still waiting to hear from IU (heās international).
His school does a weighted GPA out of 4 (A in AP is 4.25, A in honors is 4, A in standard course is 3.75)⦠His is 3.4/4 ⦠on the lower side but still good for IU in his schools GPA scale past 2 years - for those who applied, around 12 kids with GPA 3.0-3.3 were accepted (SATs in 1100-1280). His SAT score is the highest of all IU applicants whoāve ever applied to IU from his school at all GPA levels! His school doesnāt do grade inflation and has higher acceptance rate for all colleges due to school profile.
It might be different for internationals but we are OOS US applicant. Essays are important and acceptance at other decent colleges (no rejections so far) suggests that it is good (maybe not stellar). ECās were decent too⦠few clubs, 2 sport (1/3yrs in high school), 150plus of hospital voluntary work⦠IU deferral did not make sense to us! All others so far have been on expected lines.
3.75 for a regular A is tuf, tuff, tough!
That is why IU Kelley 3.8 GPA cut off needs clarity⦠if they recalculate or just use what is presented in application. A better approach would be recalculate GPA and do a wholistic approach for Kelley.
I have heard of tough grading, but i have never heard of an unweighted A being 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.
This is something that should be in the counselor report. Hopefully it was, and then hopefully it was properly considered by Admissions.
I canāt speak to Kelley situation, as we are not applying to B-school and Iām not up-to-speed on those rules.
My heart goes out to you.
Thanks⦠Luckily my kid has acceptances that he is happy with and expecting at least a couple more. So at this point, unless he gets admitted to Kelley after petition review (which can happen only IU Pre business acceptance), we are fine with the outcome. My whole point of bringing this up⦠was to show curriculum rigor needs to be taken into proper context with each school GPA scale and it is likely with so many applications, it will still be a stats (GPA cut off) driven process largely and GPA recalculation by colleges is key.
Well, the table you presented made the point about the importance of ensuring that numerical cutoffs are equitable across different GPA reporting systems.
I would hazard a guess that most people would consider the 94% minimum for an A to be tough, but then to only allocate a 3.75 on 4.0 scale would make it exponentially tougher
Not for Direct Admitā¦if one meets the GPA and test score requirements. The petition essays do matter when choosing the direct admit students who donāt meet the DA criteria for whatever reason.
I certainly understand your point. But, neither IU nor Kelley have the staff to recalculate GPAs.
IU could consider using a tool where the student does the recalculation workā¦like Common app courses and grades (but most schools donāt use it because it doesnāt give them what they need/want) or SRAR, but some schools donāt want to put more burden on the students, among other issues. Like others have said, Kelley has a process that works for them even though it isnāt perfect, same as any of the other options.
My son was standard admit last year. My daughter applied this year (not to Kelley) but my son is in it. For high achieving kids it really isnāt a struggle. Does take discipline but my son even rushed second semester. And kids who didnāt get in didnāt meet the requirements and had to āpetitionā again. If you meet the requirements itās automatic.
Is that a typo?
I would love to see where IB scores fit into this table. Year 11 at an IB school is equivalent to Grade 12 at regular high schools, thus Year 12 should be considered incredibly rigorous.
yes⦠low 1400s
Even acceptance to IU (university division for pre-business) is wild this year. People who are familiar with IU from previous years are confused when people comment about not getting in to an 80% acceptance school (thinking someone just means they didnāt get in to KELLEY). We are in-state and majority of kids want IU (some Purdue). Anecdotal, but all the kids we know at my sonās HS who have a 3.6 or below (who indicated a business major and went TO) were deferred from IU admittance completely. Kids with 3.2/3.4 (who went TO) were getting into IU; however, they did not request a business major - so this is obviously the difference. Guidance counselor at HS (huge instate HS) said this is new territory for everyone, and they donāt yet know what will happen with the deferred āgood-GPAā pre-business kids. There are so many applications for business (friendās GC said they were told 20% increase from last year, which was also previous record) that they are having to defer/deny a ton of kids who would be an automatic āinā for IU (university division) in previous years. Iām sure they run an algorithm and too many pre-business admits translates to a certain number of kids who are successful during auto standard admit. At some point they are concerned about resources and having too many in the Kelley program. My personal guess is that this year is going to be brutal with the review requests and that may/may not trickle down to the pre-business deferrals. The process is far from perfect, especially for kids with transcript anomalies or alternate grading scales, but I think the business school is drowning in demand right now and need to defer/deny many. It may become the norm that getting into pre-business is an accomplishment itself.
Agree⦠this year is a bit confusing for many. in my kids school, most kids who have applied in the past or this year to IU do it only for getting into business school! There are better options for most majors in other colleges. This year Kelley Review petition success rate is going to be even less!
