My Kelley Sophomore, in Hutton, does not get to register early due to Hutton. You would have a Hutton advisor that might give you feedback on your schedule…
Registration prioritization appears to be done according to how many credits you’ve accumulated. Nothing else.
On the class schedule/ there are Honors specific sections that are for Hutton Honors participants.
Kelley Honors comes into the fray for eligible students sophomore year…which gives business honors students the slots in ICore honors sections… which would suggest your cohort group would be above average achievers…
All these programs are Nice to have … but not essential to anyone’s existence on campus. You should choose IU for IU. These programs are nice options. But campus is full of many opportunities to shine. You can put your energy towards a long list of options and make your experience valuable.
Apparently, the primary benefits offered at Hutton are:
Possibly a $2K/yr scholarship, if you keep your GPA above 3.5.
Possibly some scholarship, less than above for a study abroad trip.
Small-class sizes for honors courses, some of which may substitute for required courses .
Opportunity to live on an honors floor of a choice of dorms (not a dedicated honors dorm).
Access to honors-only events/resources.
Access to a relatively loose community of a academically motivated peers.
A potential merit badge on the diploma.
This pkg will not be a dealmaker for us, and doesn’t offer some of the attractive aspects of other “honors colleges”.
We are grateful to have been selected, appreciate the scholarship, and hope to learn more about the program when we take the honors college tour in a few weeks.
Overall, I do not see these programs adding much to a student’s employment marketabilty. I am looking for benefits that will meaningfully and efficiently motivate and support my daughter as she builds a pathway to graduate school.
My D25 has an option to petition for Hutton in her portal. Thanks for summarizing the benefits. I think she has the stats but OOS is still too expensive for us.
Question on Red Carpet Days - is there value in attending if you have already visited the campus (official tour + 1:1 meeting with the Asst. Dean to discuss the Sports Marketing program)? This would be for the College of Public Health.
Kelly seems to have a robust 1 and 1/2 day schedule, whereas the admitted student day for College of Public health looks to be a tour + a one hour overview of the college (and all the majors within).
Value is really a question personally to you. RCD and Kelley direct admit are really the same program just IU vs Kelley on focus. RCD will provide a campus tour, some IU rah rah, students and families and community. Even Kelley admitted days aren’t often wildly informative for value as in I had no idea this or that was available., the value is in the community piece of belonging or not for the most part. If that is of value for you at IU - RCD or SPH direct admit day will be of value, if you already feel a good sense of whether you fit at IU or not, RCD is just another tour.
I understand the website states 3/15, but does anyone have any insight or rumors on when RD should start coming out? Looks like last year it may have begun the weekend before the 15th.
We just did the RCD but this was our first visit to campus. So we got an idea of the campus where the classes would be and the dorms and stuff. Not too much additional info even when we did the arts and science school specific tour in the afternoon.
Can someone provide some info on the housing selection? My son was waitlisted at his first choice school last night and I think IU is currently coming in at number 2. I tried to look through this thread, but man…it’s a long one! It sounds like last year there was no benefit to applying early…is that still the case?
As far as priority, last night on the virtual admitted student zoom, they stated that there is a lottery for priority, but it captures all housing apps signed by May 1. They also stated that they have sufficient housing for all admitted 1st years.
In addition to IU’s housing pages, you may find some useful info by checking on Reddit.
Thank you!
My kiddo is not ready to talk about next steps, because he is still soaking in disappointment and I do not have access to his portal. I wanted to make sure that we are not missing out on important next steps if he picks IU. I’m going to give him a week to be bummed and then we will figure it out.
Today’s college admissions with common app means a lot of waitlist movement post-May 1. Don’t give up hope. It’s really a question of are you willing to pay the deposit to IU or wherever and then shift to your first choice if given the opportunity. Most schools including IU on housing is not a race, just a priority deadline.
Thank you. As of last week, my S was thinking Indiana would be his second choice. If that is still the case, we will pay the deposit and move forward with housing, etc. We told him that if he was waitlisted at his top choice, we would be okay with him staying on that one waitlist. And then we can pivot if he is admitted to school #1.
They usually start with the EA deferrals, maybe as soon as tomorrow or the weekend and will hit the RD group probably Tuesday. But that’s just a guess, I haven’t actually asked anyone at IUB on RD, my knowledge and contacts is way more Kelley which is EA. System wise IU never likes to release all at the same time to avoid a portal overload but instead over days and they don’t like to wait until their actual deadline.
Heading to the Kelly admit day tomorrow. Will miss the Friday activities but will be there all day Sat. This will our first visit so any recommendation on what to do and see outside of the activities? I’m taking my son to the basketball game at 3:45 so that may hamper things a little. Will try to fit in a tour.
Fyi, the CAS admissions guy said in the virtual admitted student mtg last night that it is possible to schedule an in-person/phone/zoom mtg with major dept
Advisor+prof+student, if necessary.
