Among all the reasons to enroll or not at IUB, Hutton should not be a deal breaker.
You may read some student reviews / feedback on Reddit or talk to some current students.
Hutton says they will send out notifications āstartingā in late February which suggests Feb 28 is the first day they send out decisions but not the only day.
Accepted to IU 11/4, got into Hutton 2/28. Still no word on Kelley petitionā¦
Boiler up
Got an email from Hutton acceptance, but nothing on $?
Same here. Heard very few get more $$ but that there is usually a bit of help with study abroad?
@jefrobertson sorry to tag you, but do you have any insight into the Hutton admissions process for this year? Are they starting to roll out acceptances or are they one and done on 2/28?
Correct, I inquired weeks ago to try and leverage my max aid Purdue offer. No response yet. IU seems to be incredibly frugal with aid.
It is discussed on Hutton website (see admissions page). There was an EA application process that would release decisions starting in late Feb; they later opened a 2nd application process that would release those decisions by April 11.
Seems odd. Our older one is a junior at Kelley, currently studying abroad. Did get $1500 for this semester, but also is already receiving $2K per year from HH.
Younger one got a Deanās Scholarship ($10K/yr), same as older one. But surprised if Hutton wouldnāt at least give the sameā¦
So EA decisions are done. And then any additional decisions are from the second batch?
You might want to contact Hutton, I donāt think anyone here can give you a definitive answer on that.
The website says āstarting late Febā. I donāt think any āregularā decisions came out earlier than Feb 28, so my guess is there may be more to come from the EA/regular round.
Iāve heard the process has changed to a application-based one rather than an auto-admit one, this year. Iāve also heard that they are trying to reduce the number of students in the program. These or other program changes may affect the timing of their releases.

I have no idea. I donāt have any real contacts at Hutton nor do I find it particularly a helpful program with kelley which is where most of what I know on the undergrad is outside of admissions. They said late Feb and tried to meet that. Doesnāt make a lot of sense to batch more but who knows. Itās a totally separate standalone part of IUB.

As far as I know Hutton is not trying to reduce the numbers in the program, they are trying to encourage people to be in the program and stay. Too few IMO evaluate Hutton on the way in - IUB wants you to do that by applying.

Iām not sure Hutton will give any money this year as part of the program. Maybe. But giving money for kids to drop the next year isnāt good business. Thereās a lot who apply believing it means money not because they want to be in the program to point 2.
Re: Downsizing
Re: Hutton scholarships
Iām not even sure why Iām arguing with you. The goal, as I understand it, isnāt downsizing. it may be true that the result is fewer people - but itās not trying to be more selective for example to have fewer. They want people participating in the Hutton events. Itās a new process this year - what they did last year was take the Auto-Admits and then say (which they did not actually do) that they review all applications in EA to determine Hutton worthiness. Then if you werenāt selected you could apply. This led to a lot of people not applying thinking they were reviewed already and deemed not worthy. So much arguing about words.
Based on #1 in your original response, I am not sure why you are arguing, either.
I am not arguing at all, just providing facts.
It is clear to me that Hutton program is changing, some aspects are clear - like the selection process AND the population size. The link posted re: downsizing states that they are reducing the previous level of 1700 down to 1000, and that last year they missed the 1000 by 300 and only enrolled 700.
Facts are Hutton traditionally had around 1000 an entering class. Starting in 2021, largely due to Kelley, the average applicant meeting Hutton direct admit scores went way up, enrolling around 1600 per class through 2023. Hutton changed minimum requirements within the program starting in 2024. Hutton dropped the Auto-Admit and review of EA apps in the 2025 cycle. I certainly believe you that Hutton has a target goal again of 1000 spots. āDown sizingā is not a fact which means actively eliminating spots.
Why do we need to be so harsh on this app? Does it feel good or empowering?
It may be easier to attain Hutton it may be more difficult, Iām not sure they even know. Itās also possible they wonāt have 1000 apply. I have no idea. Exchange of ideas is great. I wish your student luck. I watched IU basketball live for the first time in about 5 years this weekend and really enjoyed seeing the community out in force. IU is national.
Not going there. Just the facts.
You agree on the facts but are disputing the semantics of what ādownsizingā means.
But whichever the case, yes they are aiming to go from 1600 a year in 2023, back to their goal of 1000 this year. In 2024 they had 700 which was too little.
If you read the requirements for the notation there is now a focus on interdisciplinary studies (āexternal minorsā) as well as a thesis. There will also be a medallion ceremony for those who complete it - very similar to Schreyers Honors College in that sense.
Well put. Interesting information on Hutton. To confirm as Iāve seen a few different things and the website isnāt clear:
- Students donāt get to register early anymore simply by being in Hutton?
- The honors classes are in fact separate sections of a class?
The reason I ask is b/c many years ago, I was in the honors college at Clemson. At the time there was general and departmental honors. General wasnāt too hard of a box to check but departmental was worthless and really just created more work for no benefit. Many of my classes were not separate classes - instead the honors aspect of the course was an extra project or test with no guidance from the prof.
I found that employers may have cared about the honors designation early on in my internship interviews but beyond that, it did not bring much benefit for the effort. I always try to know what you are getting in an honors college. Most people assume itās worth it but based on my experience, I am always skeptical. It does seem most of them are worth it now but always good to find out. And as others have said, you can always drop it.
I always thought IU registration was class standing. I could be wrong on that. You can look at the IU class schedule. Thereās a LLC, advisor, seminars, I think you get free ice skating and maybe a cookie. A bit of community. Thereās a couple of required courses that you used to be able to take by graduation and they want you taking them earlier now.
Are they looking for the best 1000 students? Do they have minimum standards? Would they take 700 again if thatās who applied? How many of the 21-23 1600 person Hutton classes were auto-admits? Are the admission standards the same when you remove that group so nothing really changed other than the raw number? Thereās a ton of unanswered questions on the basic topic of if I did not hear yet might I hear later? You can also apply to Hutton after Frosh year with a minimum GPA I believe, itās not incoming or never. Whether itās worth it and do I want it is a question I think Hutton would like people to ask more often, but obviously a lot of people when presented with why not I can drop it is 100% accurate. Hard to solve.
