Indiana University Bloomington Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

My 2 cents - I’m on the East Coast and when I have mentioned my son is considering IU, the two UNIVERSAL responses have been either - “that is a gorgeous campus” or “Is he going to Kelley? Thats a great program”. So, no one seems to know or reference the 80% acceptance around here. But at the end of the day he is a pre-business admit and if for any reason he does not get B’s, he would have to transfer becuase he is set on business.

He has been accepted to many schools with nationally higher rankings but I think IU would be his first choice if admitted (we havent visited yet). I think the pre-business is doable honestly but my biggest concern is my son is a huge sports kid - cannot keep him off the court or field and he has had two major knee injuries in the last 12 months and we’ve been told the next one is going end with a major reconstruction surgery - if he had major surgery mid semester I cannot see it not affecting his grades and it would be game over. So net-net, I am less concerned on IU National Rank and more concerned that he would be expelled from the business program which is the point of college for him.

My IU student is a junior in CS at Luddy. One reason IU beat out the other schools at the end is because it has such strong liberal arts programs university-wide. Unlike some schools that were in contention, if my student wanted to change from say, CS to public policy or English, they wouldn’t have as much to offer. IU is so well-rounded. You then need to consider cost. If OOS, it may be a higher price tag than you want if your student wants to change majors. But I really think a holistic look at the university is important, not just the strength of the major.

There is no longer a direct-admit barrier to Luddy — you are in!

If you are admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated a Luddy major on your application, you will be directly admitted into Luddy and will begin Luddy coursework at the start of your freshman year.

Undergraduate admissions: Admissions: Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering: Indiana University Bloomington.

DD had one bad semester in her high school junior year due to totally unexpected personal health concerns where her GPA dropped to 3.0; she refused to explain it in her application—too much pride.
As a result, her overall UW GPA of 3.7 (in an extremely rigorous coursework) doesn’t reflect her academic strength, and given that the drop happened in the latter part doesn’t help either.
Consequently, she didn’t apply to a number of T20 schools that her equally competitive classmates got into.
Why am I telling this? One bad semester can happen for the best of students and can derail all your plans. It’s good to have a plan B. Don’t fall for “holistic” reviews, they are not for everyone.

I think this topic is only touchy for Kelley who is proud of the ranking and gets this question nonstop. Most of it is external. People not in the business world or out West Coast will probably not know Kelley and only know IU. And many if you say IU will ask Kelley? Applying for jobs - most likely you’ll be either in your high school home area or in the college’s region. If both would know Kelley great, if not then that’s a question.

There are very few jobs out of Kelley that are unattainable because of IUB ranking. And I’m not sure even if IUB ranked same as Kelley those would be attainable. I think @idontgetthis advice on the rest is spot on.

Anyone hear about the Hutton Honors program? Website says students will be notified in late February. My son has heard nothing so far.

Haven’t heard. Website says they will hear back starting end of Feb. Hopefully by tomorrow. Will they let everyone know at once? Anyone know how it was communicated last year?

Is this the first year for the Hutton application? I tried to look in last years’ thread and it looked like it was rolling based on stats alone or am I reading that wrong?

I do believe the process was different this year. I think it was automatic last year based on stats and this year a separate application was required.

Still waiting…hoping they come out today or soon!

Just an email.

Nothing for my son. Disappointed but I guess this helps narrow down his decisions. He has other very strong options with other schools.
