We could relocate to Richmond, Virginia and have a son who will be a junior next year. What kind of grades, SATs do you need to get into UVA in-state? How hard is it to get into the business school if you’re in UVA? Do you need all A’s?

Also, don’t know if any of you know this, but… Is it as hard to get into other colleges from Richmond as it would be from the New York area? I think New York/New Jersey is really, really hard, and I guess the D.C. area would be hard too. But do other schools consider Richmond differently from D.C. or is it all just Virginia?

Hi Amazon,

We relocated to the Richmond area over 10 years ago from upstate NY. The colleges in the Virginia system are outstanding. Both of my sons attend UVa and love it there. You may want to check out the answer to your stats question for UVa on College Board or the following link:

[UVa - First-Time First-Year Admission](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_first.htm)

In-state public colleges for VA are required to accept a certain percent of their in-state applicants. There is no need to worry that you live in Richmond vs someone who lives in Northern Va or NOVA. Also, DC is not a part of Virginia, it is the Federal District of Columbia and hence not part of the in-state population.

Hope this helps!

IS admissions isn’t to hard but it is still tough. I’m not sure if Richmond is considered NoVa but I’ve heard that this area is VERY competitive. I know you don’t need all A’s and the business school you apply to sophomore year. There is a 65% acceptance rate out of the CAS.

I’m not quite sure what your asking about location. If your talking about IS vs OOS there is a huge different. OOS admissions are substantially harder than IS. If your talking in terms of colleges out side of Va that your sons might be interested in applying to - location plays near to nothing.

I think many people who work in DC live in Virginia, not actually in DC. Is it really hard to get As in the classes that you need to get into the business school?

What I was asking about is schools outside of Virginia like geographical diversity. I was wondering if Virginia is a better state to be from than let’s say New York or New Jersey.

It probably is SLIGHTLY. I mean if your coming from Montana, Alaska, or some other underrepresented state I’m sure that would have an impact. Va on the other hand is not really underrepresented.

The Commonwealth of Virginia mandates that 2/3 of the students at UVa be Virginia residents. Typically, 2/3 of our applications come from OOS. The admit rate for the Virginia pool is always higher than the admit rate for the OOS pool. You can see years of data on the admission blog. Just search for statistics.
