Colleges See Spike in Students with Disabilities, Including Elite Schools, New York Times (3/3/2026)

“Macalester College, a private liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minn., reported that 29 percent of students in 2024 had a disability, up from 5 percent a decade ago. Shammah Bermudez, head of the Center for Disability Resources at Macalester, said the needs that students are reporting now are more complicated than in past years.”

I’m no expert on ADHD or Macalester College, but do make sure that S27’s needs will be fully met by the college he ultimately chooses to attend. A college may advertise itself as “disability friendly” but in reality is unable to provide full accommodations due to lack of staff and/or resources for all of its disabled students. You know this from your knowledge & experience with Reed College. I’ve also read “Accommodation Nation” by R. Horowitch published in The Atlantic in January. “Have Accommodations Become an Unfair Advantage in Higher Education?” is a follow-up reader response article published in May.

Disability Accommodations Soar at the Most Prestigious US Universities

An article in the January 2026 issue of The Atlantic titled Accommodation Nation reports that the number of disability accommodation designated students is soaring at elite US schools such as Amherst College, Stanford University, Brown, Harvard, U Chicago, UC-Berkeley, and Princeton. Extra time & other accommodations are provided for these students when sitting for exams. 38% of students at Stanford have this designation, 34% at Amherst College, 20% at Harvard & at Brown, 17% at Princeton. The number of students qualifying for disability accommodations has soared at U Chicago & at Berkeley. Although I have not read the article, News Nation (a 24 hour news stations) presented a segment based on this article from The Atlantic.
