how do people get international and national awards? where do they apply (I’m in Canada). i don’t think my high school has any connections to these awards. national scholarships don’t count right?

There are several national awards in Canada. I know that University of Toronto has a National Biology Competition, there’s also Brain Bee and sciences fairs that can bring you to the national or international level.

Mainly, you search on the internet for national or international competitions and you’ll get a fair share of them that you can apply to if you’re Canadian, especially if you’re interested in sciences. There are applications pages on their websites most of the time but sometimes, they might require your school to register. In that case, you might just want to talk about it to the teacher who teaches the subject of the competition.
