Intermediate Honors

when are the intermediate honors notifications released? and what is the typical/average GPA for students receiving intermediate honors?

[All About Your Academic Record: University Registrar at the University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/registrar/acadrecord.html)
don’t know when they’re notified

Also wow Dean’s List is 3.5 now? It was 3.4 my first year (2006).
And CR/NC doesn’t count towards the 15 credits (and you need 15 credits)??? Wait now I need to count how many of my dean list semesters would be voided… Geez 5 semesters wouldn’t have had it, 4 of those just for credit reasons. 1 would have stayed. I missed it one semester for only having 12 credits (9 graded) easiest 4.0 ever, and 1 because I had a 3.377 which didn’t round up to 3.4…

do you think a 3.75+ would cut it for intermediate honors?

The minimum last year was a 3.725 for A&S. It’s close, but I’d say you have an excellent chance. Good luck!

Lol, when did the Dean’s List requirement change? I personally welcome it because 3.4 is honestly a bit low and 12 credits is weak sauce.

Love how the gpa for intermediate honors gets higher and higher every year…grade inflation to the max! The 15 credit requirement gets a lot of people though.

Anyone heard about intermediate honors, yet? Trying to decide on plans for parents weekend.

The minimum for 2012 is 3.717 (posted on the Registrar’s page). This is for the College. The minimum for other schools is shown in the same table.

From the Registrar’s page linked above:

“Dean’s List: Full-time undergraduate students in Architecture (require a 3.7 or above GPA), College (3.500 or higher), Education, Engineering, or Nursing who demonstrate academic excellence by earning a grade point average of 3.400 or higher, while taking a minimum of 12 credits of graded course work (15 credits for Architecture, College, and Engineering), are eligible for the Dean’s List of Distinguished Students at the end of each semester. Students in the McIntire School of Commerce are recognized who pass at least 15 credits of graded work in the preceding semester with a GPA of 3.75 or above will be placed on the Dean’s List of Distinguished Students. Courses taken on a CR/NC basis may not be counted toward the 15-credit minimum. Any student receiving an F, NC, or NG during the semester is not eligible to be on the Dean’s List.”

Hazel, With PBK recognition, I doubt anyone will challenge your academic chops, Dean’s List or not.

Thanks for using your academic talents to teach Virginia’s children!

A lot of us elem ed people were PBK! It says a lot about Curry grads. :)

I contacted the Registrar’s office…Intermediate Honors letters (College) will be mailed to students next Tuesday (September 11).

Thanks! That’s exactly what I needed to know.

Do you know if the letters were emailed or mailed through US Mail? D hasn’t received anything. She has a 3.9 so according to what’s been said up-thread, she should qualify. Are candidates selected merely on grades?

U.S. mail. I think it went to the address listed in the student record. If she moved this summer but didn’t update her address it might have gone to last year’s address. The qualifications are top 20% gpa but you also must have completed 60 hours at UVA in the first 4 semesters.

jc,

As erwinrd noted, letters were sent to the student at their Charlottesville address. Not sure why they chose to do it this way vs. sending it to the student’s permanent address. I’m sure there were quite a few letters that went missing.

Thanks for the feedback. She’s going to call the registrar and ask. She had 62 hours at UVA at the conclusion of her second year (May); however, she took a J-Term class that was three hours and fewer hours last spring. This might have disqualified her. It’s going to be a hard lesson learned if she missed it by one credit hour because she chose to spread things out with the J-Term. She was more focused on her GPA (pre-med) and decided taking the 800 series chem, physics, bio, Calc 2, all labs, etc. would be GPA suicide if she took on too much. Plus, she’s a year-round athlete, is in a sorority, conducting/publishing research, etc. so finding time to even take 15 hours a semester has been a challenge.

Update…letters were also mailed to parents. Letter is dated 9/24.

jc – I wouldn’t be too disappointed if your daughter somehow missed this artificial benchmark in her academic career. In no way do I wish to demean the honor due to those who met the threshold requirements, but your daughter looks by all accounts to be incredibly talented and focussed. She is well along the path to goal she has chosen, med school. I don’t think there is a med school out there that is looking for the “intermediate honors” designation on her transcript. You daughter seems focussed on her ultimate goal. If this intermediate one slipped by on a technicality, well, she has bigger fish to fry.

Congratulations on your daughter’s focus and determination.

Thanks, AVA55 and others. I haven’t spoken to her to see if she contacted the registrar today. I didn’t receive a letter, so I’m thinking she wasn’t eligible because she didn’t complete the 60 hours in 4 semesters but rather 4 + the J-Term. Oh, well! It’s a disappointment but you’re right…her ultimate goal is med school and her GPA is more important than this distinction; still, it would have been nice.
