International Applicant Help

I have got two questions.

1) Since I have already applied to an SCEA, do i have wait for the result to come or can i apply to other schools in the RD before that? I don’t want my applying before to cause any problem with my SCEA.

2) Well while writing the college essays i found that two of my selected schools have almost the same essays. So can i just use the same one for both of them? would this create any discrepancy, i mean is there any chance for the schools to know which essay i submitted to other school?

Just read on Yale’s website, you may apply to RD as well as SCEA,

[Single-Choice Early Action for Freshman Applicants | Yale College Admissions](Single Choice Early Action for First-Year Applicants | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions)

SCEA at Yale,

“If you would like an admissions decision by mid-December, you may apply under Yale’s Single-Choice Early Action program (otherwise known as Restrictive Early Action on Common Application forms). The program is like other non-binding plans in that candidates who are admitted early need not respond to the offer of admission until May 1, and may apply to other schools for Regular Decision.”

If the topic is same or similar, I think the same essay should be alright.

Thank you anialways, your answers are always informative and i appreciate it. Now I think now i will apply to other univ. before the SCEA result comes.

You are very welcome. No problem.

you will be fine as long as you don’t apply early to any other school

thanx Bchanakya i have already started their apps.
btw i have got one more query, don’t want to start another thread for this so i am asking it here.
I am thinking of applying to G TECH and i think that it is a match for me (SAT- 2260) but it does not offer any aid to int’nals and i can only afford the tuition fees there so will i be able to manage my personal expenses and off-campus residence rents with just part time jobs and that too without putting a pressure on my studies? thanks in advance… :)

As an International student on F1 Visa, you are not allowed to work in the first year. Second year onwards you can start working but my understanding is that you can work a maximum of 20 hours a week during the semester.

Also remember if you get paid job that time period of work will be deducted from your OPT time. OPT is the time you are allowed to work in US during or on completion of your
degree program. The OPT period is 12 to 17 months depending on your major. While on OPT one can work and do not need a work visa. So any paid Internship during the graduation will eat into your OPT time. Most students use it to work and find sponsors after the graduation. It gives them about one year of extra stay without H1B Visa.

So that means that i should not indulge in a lot of jobs there during my graduation as it will affect my further stay. But do those 20 hrs a week come in OPT? And Approximately how much can one earn from doing that 20 hours job? Thank You and Sorry for so many questions, i am just confused… :(

As far as I know 40 hours a week for a month will count as one month of OPT time. Yes the 20 hours per week will affect your OPT time. It will count as half a month though.

http://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/students/resources/working

You can about earn 10 dollar an hour to begin with. But the good thing about that is the Internship experience…office culture, , professionalism, real work, dealing with people…

On Campus recruitment does not require you to apply for OPT. So instead you can tutor students and earn pocket money. I know about New York. The tuition charges in NYC begin at 40 dollars an hour. So there will be lot of people needing help with Homework, writing papers…so if you have skills there you could use them. You do not need a work visa for that, OPT or H1 B.

Thank you i will consider this tutoring option too and that link was very helpful so again you have my thanks. :)

It is my understanding that US immigration rules stipulate that if you are on an F-1 visa, you are allowed to work 20 hours a week ON CAMPUS during your freshman year. I do not know the OPT rules. If you tutor off campus and get reported you can get into a lot of trouble. The penalty for non citizens breaking the laws is deportation and a life time ban on entering the US. I would check with your international student office before embarking on any job.

Also you have to file taxes on any income that you earn. I would tread very carefully around INS and IRS rules.
