International student - graduate school advice

Hello, I’m a Chinese senior student in an 211 project university of China and I major in Electronics engineering.
My GPA is 3.65/4 and I’ve got three internships, one of them was in Xiaomi. I was engaged in two programmed, focused on FPGA programming and machine learning algorithms respectively.
I got an IELTS of 8.0, my budget is relatively sufficient and I’m considering universities in USA and Europe. I sincerely look for advises from you.

Moderator Note: This is a current junior undergrad looking at CMU, GT, and Columbia for graduate school. I merged a new thread from the OP at the bottom of this thread. Hopefully that clarifies things!

Tagging @MYOS1634 to evaluate your academic strength.

Have you taken the SAT or ACT or plan to?

Is your budget more than $370,000 for four years of college?

Which US colleges are best known to employers in your home country?

Does this mean you are currently in HS taking college courses, or what?

I’m guessing you’re in your 3rd year at university looking for a Master’s or PHD program. Is that correct, or are you a secondary school student preparing for university/higher education ?

sry if I made an misapprehension, I’m currently a 3rd grade university student

A present 3rd university student, sry for being unarticulated

Meaning you are entering your third year of college…or what?

@skieurope can you explain this terminology?

I’m entering the fourth year of my college.

Companies in my country focus mainly on work experience, I’m also wondering if my major(EE,about semiconductors analog design and semiconductor devices)has a nice career vista in the US and easy to apply for a job.

You can work in the U.S. for 3 years after graduation. After that, if you want to continue working here you will need to find an employer willing to sponsor a work visa. You will also need to be able to actually get that visa through a lottery system. So it’s possible but definitely not easy.

thanks!

So what exactly are you looking for. A graduate program or what???

Is this poster attending college in the US? I didn’t think so

Not currently, but they plan to (for graduate studies I guess), and they asked about career prospects here. That’s the question I responded to.

I’m very unclear what this poster is looking for. Is it graduate studies? Is it transferred to a college here? Is it getting a job here?

Nope they clarify

Hello, I’m a Chinese 3rd grade university student of China and I major in Electronics engineering, searching for a master’s degree in the states.
My GPA is 3.65/4 and I’ve got three internships, one of them was in Xiaomi, which is a world top 500 company.I was engaged in two programmed, focused on FPGA programming and machine learning algorithms respectively.
I got an IELTS of 8.0, my budget is about 300,000 dollars.
As far as I see, companies in my country mainly focus on internships and work experiences, so I’d like to seek for advise and evaluation:

1.Am I qualified for the universities above?

2.Does my major (EE, semiconductor devices and analog/digital design,my expertise)has a promising vista in the states? Is it easy to get a job?

3.If possible I’d like to stay in the states for another couple of years, will the companies in the states be able to prolong my visa?

This was posted in a subject by the OP and clarifies what he is looking for…I think.

Depends on how strong a student you are. I’ll defer to others to evaluate your credentials.

I explained the sponsorship process in an earlier post.

Your student visa cannot be extended. You get a work permit for up to 3 years after you graduate. After that you need to be sponsored for a work visa - which you may or may not get (it’s not up to the company you work for).

Thanks for providing further information. Do you know how you rank in your program ? In the US, 3.65 is good, a solid GPA, but not elite along the lines of CMU/Columbia. However GPA “value” can vary. Can you precise ?

Just to add some context. Project 211 universities can vaguely be perceived as top 100 Chinese universities. Project 985 universities (there are 39) are perceived as tier 1 universities. Many graduates from these 39 schools have extended their studies and researches in high rank US graduate programs. OP identified his school as 211 instead of 985. This indicates it’s not one of those 39.
OP, have you taken GRE yet? GRE score is what you use to gauge your chance to graduate program, along with your undergraduate grades and project portfolio.
