I’m a Vietnamese who was born and grew up in Vietnam, therefore I don’t have a high school diploma in the U.S. And now I want to go to a college of nursing in Alabama where I’m living. In order to applying for an admission in this school, I have to pass the test either TOFEL or IELTS. Can anyone recommend me any idea or opinion about which one I should take? Or which one is better and economically?
The TOEFL is the more common test in the US and would probably be more convenient for you. There’s 8 TOEFL test centers in Alabama with upcoming test dates, but no scheduled IELTS test dates in the entire state. (The nearest IELTS test centers might be Murfreesboro, TN or Jackson, MS.)
The TOEFL is slightly cheaper ($205 vs $240-$260).
The two tests have different formats, some of which appeal more to some test takers than others. You can find comparisons online if you care. (For example, the TOEFL is administered on a computer and the IELTS on paper.)
While deciding whether to appear for IELTS or TOEFL, you can take the following factors into consideration:
See what the schools that you are applying to ask for (TOEFL or IELTS)
-Which format works for you: The TOEFL and IELTS both have different exam formats. For example, the TOEFL speaking section is computer-based whereas in IELTS for the speaking section you have to give an interview. So, you can decide based on what format works best for you.
-The cost of the exams.

Where have you studied English in the US? If it is convenient for you, chances are that that place offers a TOEFL prep class. Also, check the community colleges near you to see what they have available. At the community college where I teach, we have many different Academic English classes and at least one TOEFL prep class.
