International Waitlist Success Stories

Has anyone heard of them? I haven’t, but if you have please share what you know about the stories: stuff like follow-up letters, recommendations, awards etc.

I am also using this opportunity to ask you waitlistees what you did to improve your chances.

I had a bad ED deferral experience (and I am certain that there are others who got rejected after being deferred), and that leads me to another question:did any international ever get off a deferral list?

There was a Vietnamese in my high school who got off Williams waitlist 2 years ago and his contribution was $2000. Also, I read somewhere that Colby accepted 2 students from Romania and China from the waitlist and offer them full aid.
This is the thread where the Williams student told his story, in case you’re interested:

Last year a girl from my town got off the waitlist of Colby College and received full ride.

jaah, thanks for the link. it was really interesting.

dat’s quite encouraging… any more success stories??

i got off ED deferral to colgate with full ride

anirudh_22, that is superimpressive! might I ask what you did to improve your chances of admission?

actually not much, except writing an email when I received the deferral telling that Colgate was my first choice and blah blah… and then once again the same thing in feb to remind them that colgate still remained my top choice…

so, in your e-mail you did not write an essay saying how good a fit colgate is for you, something like a why colgate? essay?
So was it more like a 5 sentence e-mail or more like a 15 sentence e-mail?

actually its a long story… I dont think i shd have been deferred in the first place… they mixed up my forms and I was deferred to ED II. Obviously i was ****ed off, and sent them a dozen e-mails saying how I was an ED I applicant and not II and I shd be getting my decision as soon as possible so I think they just went ahead and deferred my application to RD. and the e-mail was not why colgate type , but it was quite long basically explaining my anger on being deferred to ED II since I was so committed to Colgate.

So it seems to me that they would have accepted you if you had had your file in order in ED I. Messy admissions play with your nerves. Anyway, congratulations on your acceptance!

thanks… where r u headed?

probably lafayette college, though it was not my first choice school on my admitted list, and I didn’t quite feel a connection/vibe or attraction to the school.

my senior from my school, got into UPenn after being waitlisted.
I think it had to do with her withdrawing her financial aid request. But she did have impressive scores.

speaking of messy apps…thats what happened to my Cornell ED app.
The app deadline was near my exams…so i wrote some essays in a hurry. as they were nowhere near what I wrote for Univeristy of Chicago(Early Action acceptee) and Stanford(withdrew app after ED), In early December (2weeks before decision were announced!!!) I asked whether I could rewrite them. Imagine my astonishment when they said yes, just 2hrs after sending the request…they asked me to hurry cuz decisions were already almost made. So i did and somehow got the green chit on December16.

Arjun, do you know what scores did your senior from high school have? just curious. and are you talking about this year’s admissions or last year’s?
