Internship when relative is in field of study?

I'm a sophomore and I'm thinking about internships, and my major is exercise biology (kinesiology, etc). However, my mom works in the field and I can volunteer (and did this summer) doing hands-on rehab with people (not actual stuff, but like pushing wheelchairs, throwing a ball to people, helping with stretching, etc).

How necessary do you think an internship is if I have this resource at my disposal?

I would think an internship would be slightly more impressive, especially if it's a paid internship that gets a high volume of applications. Volunteering definitely isn't looked down on in any way, though. I'd say apply for some internships that interest and if you don't get any, volunteer.
