Interview at The Lawrenceville School Question

My son completed his interview with the The Lawrenceville School yesterday and he spoke with the admissions counselor for 30 minutes. They did not invite a parent in to talk with them after the interview. Is is difficult to tell how it went. Is it a bad sign that they didn’t invite a parent in to talk after his interview?

He sent a thank you email this morning to the admissions counselor who interviewed him.

No, it is not a bad sign. More likely that a follow-up interview with the parents might be a bad sign depending upon the content of the discussion.

Lawrenceville is admitting the student, not the parents, so no need to interview parents unless there were special concerns regarding your child.

While it is the norm at most schools to invite the parents in for the end of the interview., it’s possible that the schedule was tight and there just wasn’t time.

It’s unlikely to be a sign - good or bad – about the interview though.

What @gardenstategal wrote is correct. It is not a sign one way or the other.

Having the parents interview is Standard Operating Procedure at many if not most boarding schools, and is definitely not a sign of any problem, though.

My daughter applied to Lawrenceville, Andover and Exeter. Lawrenceville interviewer was very informal and invited me to talk with him in his office while my daughter was talking with some student guides and a coach gathered at the admissions office. It was just a friendly chat talking about our common backgrounds. Andover interviewer invited me at the end of the interview to ask a question about her residential decision. Exeter did not invite me to the interview but the coach reached out to me via a recruitment email. When my eldest applied to St.Paul’s, I was invited at the end of the student interview with standard questions about why St.Paul’s. The interviews or non-interviews were all good ways for me to gauge another strand of each school’s culture. You as a family are evaluating the school just as much as the school evaluating your student. It’s helpful to remember that. Wishing everyone lots of acceptances!
