iOS7.0 - thoughts/experiences??

FlyMe, you should also be able to turn the brightness down - I believe that was one of the things you could do with the swipe up on the homescreen.

General question: if we lock our phones, how does the ICE “in case of emergency” phone number work? Can police still get that number if we’re in a car accident?

I’m not a fan, but then I don’t like change. I have a 4s and it took me all night to get the blasted thing done (yes, I’m hyperfocused once I start something). I max out my space so had to clear out things. The ‘other’ was full of junk so I ended up backing up, wiping it, reinstalling, and reinstalling with 7. No issues there. To clear out issues with email I deleted all accounts and reinstalled. For some freaking bizarre reason 7 doesn’t have a option to show only say 50 latest emails, etc. I ended up with over 12k emails. So I’ve been dealing with that for a day. I’ve looked at every setting I can think of with no luck so I am literally in the process of deleting emails. I’m down to 6,854 now so darn good progress.

I haven’t noticed the battery drain, but I’ve had massive issues since 6.1 and have had to keep background apps off, location off of most things, etc., so I wouldn’t notice it if 7 was bad on battery life either. The actual look of the interface…new icons…just don’t make sense. The calendar is different and I don’t like the view. Text message bubbles wiggle slightly which is odd and I’m not sure why. I’m not 13. Siri will now attempt to learn the correct pronunciation of your name which is a massive improvement as both my husband and I have names that are not easy for these types of programs. Even the keyboard is off. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Were they going for a retro feel. It’s like I tried on something out of the vintage bin that just doesn’t fit (and I can usually pull off a cute boho top with faded jeans…). I sound like a curmudgeon… humph. I can not reconcile this interface with the gold 5s. The 5c’s absolutely, but the gold, slate, etc., cry for a sleeker interface.

The tech department at my firm strongly suggests we wait a while to upgrade. They are seeing a lot of bugs and apps that do not work on 7 yet.

I upgraded my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 and have had no problems. I can swipe with my Otter Box case (heavy duty) but I have to get to the very bottom. Everything seems to be working fine for me.

I had to find my email trashcan, but it turns out that it is just a swipe to the left to delete.

upgraded my 4.0, and it went seemlessly – took about an hour.

Our firm just received the following from our Tech folks:

"A security flaw has been discovered in IOS 7 that would allow a person with access to an iPhone or iPad to circumvent the security and gain access to email and social networking accounts such as Facebook, Twitter etc via the new Control Center feature.

Apple is aware of the problem and has announced it will be corrected in an upcoming release of the IO 7 software. In the meantime, the corrective action is simple.

Go to Settings, then Control Center and turn off the option Access on Lock Screen."

downloaded the update Wednesday on Iphone 4S and Ipad mini. It took awhile on the phone but only about 30 mins on the mini. I really like it. The brightness of the keyboard is much easier for my old eyes:) No problems so far!!

The weather was so beautiful last night… I should have just stayed and camped out at the Stanford shopping center with the appleheads. :)

I did so on my iPad, haven’t done on the iPhone yet. I do not like the new color scheme at all. It’s garish, not elegant. It looks like some twentysomething in Cupertino thinks it looks cool.

It took me a bit to discover that I could close applications by swiping them off. I dislike having lost the functionality of easily deleting messages.

And it automatically wants me to have a password - and I don’t want my iPad to have a password. My whole family uses it; there’s nothing secret on it.

I’m unsure about the iCloud. If I take a picture on my iPhone, I don’t know that I do want it automatically “sent” everywhere on my system.

The lock screen security problem is not much. And you can eliminate it yourself by turning off the ability to access the control center on the lock screen in the control center setting. Pretty simple fix.

If you have battery drain, you have something else going on. It isn’t the OS. I suggest starting by checking the new, really good setting for cellular. They’ve moved cellular on/off to the top level of settings and added a usage stat for each app that uses cellular. So I can scroll down and see that Gmail has used 1.8MB since reset. This setting is a big improvement; before I had to go into General and then find the Cellular setting. I turn my cell radio off at home to make sure I use wifi and I have a reminder set up when I leave home and arrive home to turn it on or off. Reminders now have the ability to set a perimeter - geofencing - that you can squeeze to a minimum or expand to cover a wider area.

Many things are easier. For example, when you slide to unlock the keypad that pops up for password is really big, which makes the process easer. (I set the pin req for 15 minutes, btw, because that’s a nice compromise for me.) With Mail now, you swipe left to get a delete option and swipe right takes you into the mail itself, which is a change but one that makes sense. Same with Reminders, which is now super clean looking.

There are so many changes - I suggest reading about them - but one of my favorites is the lock screen now shows a picture over its entirety. I switch the picture all the time. And right now it’s a picture of one of my favorite, now dead pets looking grizzled and it fills the screen and feels that much closer.

The basic truth is iOS continues to just work. The transitions are fast and smooth in every single case. Siri is quicker. (I use Siri a lot for quick reminders and notes, like someone tells me their email address and I say, “New note blah blah” and Siri says “Got it”.) Some of the details are beautiful, like the level in the compass app. With a dynamic background shifting behind the icons, my iPhone feels more like a window into something. But it basically works like before.

I upgraded my iPad but haven’t used it much since. My impression was the OS looks better on the phone and a mini than a full-sized iPad; the icons are much farther apart. But the OS still transitions smoothly.

Ive been playing with it for about a day.
I like the brightness. It seems much more open & larger without the bars across the screen & the font is easier to read, I dont have to squint.
I did get into the control panel & disabled all kinds of " updating in background, & location tracking", to save battery.

Roommate works at a place that happens to test the new phones well before they are released to the public. So here’s an account of someone who has used it for more than a few hours:

As usual, most of us will get the new OS, and hope that Apple listens to its base and eliminates some of the annoyances.

And, as usual, the Manzana fanboys, especially the uber-egotistical-morons who stayed in line for days/hours for a 5C/S, will clamor that it is better than everything else.

And, finally, and as usual, someone on CC will revert to ad hominem to dispel anyone who dares to criticize. #Youknowwhoyouare! :)

I thought finding search was pretty easy, & closing misbehaving apps is similar to before, just a flick instead of a click.

I don’t think that has changed with iOS7. My ICE app doesn’t show up until the phone is unlocked. What I did to get around that issue was to create a document that said “If Found, Call xxx-xxx-xxxx. In case of emergency, call one of my ICE contacts below” and then I listed a couple of phone numbers. Then I took a photo of the document and used it as wallpaper on my lock screen.

Not very elegant but it does the trick until Apple designs a way for ICE contacts to display on the lock screen.

You can make your ICE number into a screenshot, save & have it as your lock screen wallpaper. You could add other pertinent info also.

Some Europeans are calling IOS7 … une passoire. Not too hard to know what that means! :)

Here’s a video about what can happen:

Apple should have learned a thing or two from MSFT ;)

Patsmom and EK - thank you both very much.

Not sure if this is unique to the new OS, but
After I read some of the posts on this thread to him, Hubby was just now messing around with talking to SIri about reminders , finding restaurants, etc. He switched to the male voice and I said “Eww -that sounds like Hal from 2001!” Then hubby said to male Siri “open the pod bay doors, Hal” and the response was “sigh”! LMAO.
he tried it again just now and the reply was “I’m sorry Hubby’sName, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” BWAH!
