iphone, blackberry, or something else?

I have recently started traveling for work and I need a way to access email from various locations (like airports). I am fairly neo-techno-phobic; I didn’t get my first cell phone until about four years ago, but now I love it. I am excited about being able to keep in touch easily via email but not so excited about figuring out how to do that.

The other consideration is that I will be upgrading my old Dell clunker of a laptop in the fall. My plan is to get a Macbook. Would the compatibility between the iphone and the Mac be a big deal?

MathildaMae, iPhone is an Apple product and should work seamlessly with a Mac. I’m very happy with my iPhone. Adding your e-mail account to your iPhone is a piece of cake. I was able to figure out how to configure my work Exchange-based e-mail on my iPhone in no time.

The best choice is the Nexus One. Is an Android phone and works well on T-Mobile. It is coming to Verizon sometime in March or April. AT&T sometimes in 2010. I have compared the iphone and Nexus One extensively and the Nexus One is faster, permits more than one function at a time, and most importantly the screen resolution is materially better.

Go with the iPhone as long as you are getting a Macbook. You will be so happy you did and will never look back!

If you live around NYC (and a little north of the city), ask your friends if they’ve experienced a number of drop-off calls using the iPhone. Our son loved his iPhone but got tired of the dropped calls. He ended up going back to a Blackberry.

Just don’t ever EVER drop your iPhone. Cool looks, stupid screen design.

I have an iPhone, don’t have a MAC, and the one isn’t really tied in any way to the other so the question of the phone really has nothing to do with whether you get a MAC or a Windows laptop.

I have an iPhone and don’t experience the call dropping problem. However, my first iPhone failed with the wireless (not the phone network) suddenly quit working so I had it replaced under warranty (after showing the Apple ‘Genius’ how they were testing it incorrectly) and now this iPhone has a weird intermittent problem where it’ll lose connectivity with the phone network but give no indication of it resulting in people calling you getting just your VM. I need to take it in again and see if they’ll do a warranty replacement again - I’m not sure they will. Although I’m impressed with Apple’s general design and features of the phone I’m not impressed with the quality of it since I think a phone should last more than a year before some subcomponent of it fails. So, I like the iPhone except when it’s broken.

One factor to keep in mind is the network and how you’ll use the phone. I wanted a phone I could just head to Europe with and have it work which means a GSM phone which pretty much means AT&T or T-Mobile. I used to have T-Mobile but their coverage around here is the worst of the providers so I switched to AT&T.

I have iPhone and Blackberry. IPhone is fun and an extension of my hand. I am addicted and will be in a 12 step program shortjy. Blackberry is a better business device and much easier to type on. Get a case for iPhone that will create a lip around the screen.

I love my iPhone as a mini-computer but as a cell phone it drops calls much more often both in NYC and the Philadelphia suburbs than my old Treo that was on the Sprint network. AT&T is terrible. Another iPhone complaint is that it does not work with the bluetooth in my car. When my two years are up I will be leaving AT&T.

How about an HTC Touch Pro 2? The email in not quite instantaneous and it doesn’t have a lot of game apps, but all the other features are amazing, and it has a full keyboard!

the app stores for the other phones are nothing like what is available for iphone.
like generic ice milk that has been refrozen compared to boutique handmade ice cream ;)

I have a blackberry tour, on my 2nd one as the first one never worked right- I believe they are redesigning it, and it is OK although browser very slow and nothing like what is with the itouch/iphone.

I have Verizon, and while I have had the best luck with their service network, their phones aren’t always the greatest, although by mid April sounds like some anticipated updates on Blackberry will be released.

( I am on my 2nd Macbook Pro, and can sync with my Blackberry fine.)

Yes, if you go with an iPhone, get a good case for your iPhone - with a lip! I have the ifrogz case (like this one [Custom Colors and Wheels for Your iPod |ifrogz](http://ifrogz.com/products.php?cat=494&wrap_overlay=5096|IPHONE3G-FL)), and I threaded a wrist strap through the little opening on the side of the case (like this one [Nikon Wrist Strap](http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/304031-REG/Nikon_25623_AN_CP14_Wrist_Strap.html/mode/edu)) - makes it so much easier to carry the phone when my outfit does not have belts and pockets!

ATT has very decent coverage here in my neck of the woods. We switched after being with TMobile for almost 10 years, because TMobile’s coverage became abysmal (and its US headquartes are located 20 miles south from where we live!).

Take into consideration what provider works best in your area. In our neck of the woods it is hit or miss with most of the carriers depending on what part of town you are in. My D lives in Florida and she has had great service with ATT, her BF has Sprint and has lousy coverage.
For several years my H and I had different carriers. It worked great when we traveled. One of our phones would always work.

I agree. I have one from ‘Speck’ with substantial cushioning on the edges and an adequate lip to protect the phone if dropped. Plus it makes it much less likely to drop the phone in the first place - the ‘nude’ iPhone is kind of slippery and fairly easy to drop or slide off of something but the rubbery plastic cover prevents much of that.

I just got an iPhone and Macbook Pro six days ago. My Macbook is at the Apple store (along with my old Dell laptop) for a data transfer, and I will be picking it up tomorrow night.

Prior to the iPhone, I had a Blackjack, and we’ve always had AT&T. With work, we’ve gone through various carriers, and when my work cell phone can’t get a signal in some area, I can always get a signal with AT&T… that’s in the six-county Chicago area.

In the last six days, I’ve already done more with my iPhone than I did with my Blackjack in two years. It is the most phenomenal piece of technology I’ve ever owned. Not only would I recommend a good case, but also a protective shield for the front. The one I got is anti-glare, and I had no problems watching a downloaded TV show episode while working out at the gym today.

Am looking forward to getting the computer back tomorrow so I can start learning how to use the calendar (I’m lost right now without it!) and synching them both.

Here is one last plug for iPhone - my boss ditched his Blackberry when he joined our company and got an iPhone as his new business phone (lucky dog, the co. pays for his phone and service while I have to pay for mine and use it to answer his e-mails :)!)

I just got my first MacBook last weekend. I opted to transfer data from Dell to Mac. I purchased a software online for $10 to move outlook data to Mac.

I used to love my BB. After getting IPhone it’s really no comparison. Unfortunately I still need to carry BB for work so they could zap me whenever necessary.

Does anyone have a Nexus One? I have Verizon, and would like an iphone, but AT&T coverage doesn’t work for us. The Nexus looks interesting.

I will be in the position of making this choice in a couple of months. I currently have a BB. With verizon.
I’m VERY tempted to go with the iphone. I use an ipod and would love to integrate everything.
But I’m worried about the typing. I use my BB for emails and texting. Is it a tough adjustment to go to an iphone?

I’ve had an iPhone for a few years now. (Yeah, I know, my husband bought me one when they first came out.) At this point me and both girls all have iPhones. So I’m looking at 6 years of iPhone ownership, and we haven’t had to bring them in for service or had them break yet. As for ease of use, I think the i stands for idiot. They are ridiculously easy to set up and learn to use. I love mine for email. And maps, and weather. My daughter’s love the apps. I don’t go anywhere without it.

AT&T does have somewhat spotty coverage here in the lower San Francisco peninsula. But it seems to be getting better all the time. Communities here tend to be much more nimby when it comes to cell towers, so there just aren’t that many.
