I’m a 10th grader, and am unsure about joining new clubs in my junior year. I am currently in Model UN, the math club, and the chess club; however, I feel as if these clubs seem to be all stereotypical clubs for all academically competitive students, of which my school already has many of. To separate myself from those other students, what I want to do, and what I wish I have already done, is to join the National Art Honor Society chapter at my school. This is not some random club I chose to stand out and demonstrate creativity. I have had a developing passion for drawing, sketching, and painting since my 9th-10th grade summer. Had I been more conscious of the importance of extracurricular activities in my freshman and sophomore years, I would have already joined NAHS. Now, I can’t help but feel that it is too late for me to join. If I were to join NAHS this late, would colleges view it as superficial, extra padding for my resume? Also, would joining the club be worth it if I cannot attain a leadership role in it?

Good ECs + Random Club Junior Year > OR = Good ECs

If you like artistic things, then go for it.

Joining NAHS next year won’t hurt you. It sounds like you already have good ECs (although its hard to judge without more info.). But one thing that’s worrying me is thinking about how important are these ECs to you? Do you really enjoy them, or would you stop doing them if it wasn’t for colleges? If you don’t enjoy them, then they probably aren’t good ECs. Colleges want to see you interested in stuff. That’s the whole point of ECs.

You should join NAHS if you’re interested in it! I would recommend that you gain some role of authority in the club to show colleges your commitment to it.
