IS 1700 ON YOUR FIRST SAT'S bad?

my friend thinks he’s going to get 1700 on his first SAT’s
is that bad?

It’s above average and not bad considering it’s his first time taking it.

It really depends on what you define bad as. If you are going for IVY league, even if he took it again, i would say his chances are low. On the other hand, there are many schools that a 1700 would put you in the top 25%. So, you can decide for yourself.

Heres what I said in the other thread: “How smart is your friend? I have friends who would be jealous of his 1700, so it all depends on what he is capable of.”
It all depends on what schools he is applying to, etc. If he thinks he can get a 2200, then he could cancel if he wanted to, but if 1700-1800 is his limit, then I wouldn’t cancel. If he doesn’t cancel then he would be able to show improvement between the two sats, but if he does alot better, they will ask what the heck happened.

If he doesn’t want to aim for any top schools, then a 1700 is okay… but for Ivies and schools of that caliber, there is extremely, extremely little chance he’d get in unless he’s either a URM, a recruited athlete, or another special case.

for schools like BU and possibly tufts (a little harder to get into) would a 1700 the first time look bad? i know people get into BU with 1800’s but i dont think thats the case with tufts.

BU and Tufts are extremely different. BU may accept 1800-1900 scores, but Tufts most likely will not.

1700 is pretty bad for any of the more competitive schools

The average SAT score for Tufts is 2110 – that’s higher than Columbia, by the way.

The average SAT score for BU is 1915.

So Tufts is not just “a little harder to get into.” Tufts is up there with some Ivies and comparable schools, while BU is not. Regardless, 1700 out of 2400 is not going to help your friend.

IF your friend retakes it and is closer to 1900, a shot at BU is still possible. I am afraid Tufts will likely not want to take a chance on your friend unless he has other hooks (extremely high class rank, legacy, athletics, URM, etc. etc.) that really overshadow his very low [for Tufts] SAT score.

Can’t he take the ACT? Many people who do poorly on the SAT do better on the ACT.

BTW: Look here for average SATs and ACTs of several schools: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=310352

yea but if u get a 1700 the first time than improve to say a 1900-2000 will the 1700 greatly affect your chances of getting in? i took the march sat and i dont really know what im gonna get, but im just curious whether a 1700 would really hurt me.

well.
he has a 4.5 gpa
ranked 10 out of 600
same school as me
same classes
has a LOT of leadership positions
plus 1000+ hours volunteering.
but he’s like an immigrant
so its hard for him to you know, grasp the concepts of idiomatic expressions and reading comprehension.
he wants to apply to
Carnegie Mellon
Boston College
Boston U
NYU
basically wants a full ride as much as I do
should he cancel?

Not being able to grasp the subtleties of idiomatic expression would probably only cost him 5-6 questions at the mo. Reading comprehension more… but I dunno.

If he wants to go to those schools I would say, yeah definitely cancel a 1700…

1700 isn’t bad.

well he wants to know
if like.
he gets 1700 the first time
and then gets
like around 2000 the second time
would that show good?
or would he just cancel, and shoot for 2,000 next time?

Cancel and shoot for the 2k next time around.

well
you know for the sats
when you self-report your scores
how will the schools know
about your first SATs scores?

bumppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

Perhaps there was a reason for the disappointing score?
Studying & a second try are always worthwhile…

yeah he kinda got hungover from drinking the night before.

Cancel that score and stop drinking on the worst nights possible.
