Is 19 Credits and 6 Classes Too Much For the First Semester?

I just went to NSO and am signed up for the following classes:

1 credit - Engineering 191
4 credits - Physics 151 + lab
3 credits - Engineering 113 + lab
4 credits - Honors Seminar: Ideas That Changed the World 201H
3 credits - Multivariate Calculus 233H
4 credits - Greek Civilization

They combine for 6 classes and 19 credits. Do you think this is too much for the first semester, or should I get rid of Greek Civilization?

Get rid of something. That schedule looks brutal. Honestly, I personally would get rid of physics, but since you’re an engineering major and probably need it as a pre-req, I’d recommend you get rid of Greek.

Also, who do you have for Ideas? Some teachers assign more work than others. You could get of rid that class instead depending on your teacher.

Btw, I’m signed up for Physics and Greek next semester too. =)

For Ideas, I have Brion Dulac. Is he a teacher that assigns more work or less work than average? Which teachers assigns less work?

I guess I’ll probably get rid of Greek then since the first five classes are required as an engineering major. What are you majoring in and how many classes are you taking?

I think Dulac is in the mid-range. I’d recommend Nemec if you can fit her class; her section was pretty easy and actually relaxing.

I’m a second year CS major taking 5 classes (19 credits) next semester.

Hey guys, did you noticed that you all were charged $300 for NSO ???

The $300 is a standard freshman entry fee

My only two options are Yehudit Heller and Dulac. Do you know if Heller would be better?

I don’t think Heller is better. You’re probably safer with Dulac. The thing is, there’s no review for Dulac on Rate My Professors, so he’s probably a more recent hire to the department.

Heller has reviews, and while most say she’s an excellent teacher, they don’t say much about her workload. On the other hand, she could be the kind of teacher who will be lenient about a deadline here or there if you have a ton of work to do. My professor apparently assigned the most work of all the teachers, but she was flexible.

I knew a lot of people who had Dulac for ideas… they said he was kinda tough at the beginning, but once they hit halfway through the semester they didn’t do anything… they just watched youtube videos and said their professor was on drugs… so they enjoyed his class.
I personally had Connolly Ryan and he was amazing and really no work involved either. but his sections fill pretty fast
I had a friend who had heller and i dont think heller was well liked… not hated or anything but definitely not comparable to the other profs who teach it

More opinions on original question appreciated.

You will likely burn out. Many schools do not allow first semester freshman to overload like that.

my son has 19 credits for his fall term at northeastern and he asked his advisor about dropping a class and his academic advisor told him he would fall behind on graduating on time if he dropped a class and that 16-19 credits was standard. not that anybody graduates “on time” at northeastern. I’m seriously concerned that it’s too much. The helicopter mom in me really wants to contact the advisor to tell him it’s crazy but I can’t.
