Is 5 applications enough?

Hey everyone!

I am applying to:

Reach: Cornell

Match: UVa (1st Choice, Legacy), Georgetown, Berkeley

Safety: UF (Residency)

Is 5 enough schools? I am pretty sure I will get into UVa so I don’t want to kill myself over applications. Should I add another reach and another safety or just leave my list as is?

i don’t know if berkeley will be a match OOS.

i know applications are expensive, so you shouldn’t do more than you have to, but all the same you might want one more safety, unless you already know you like UF

we wont know if those 5 are enough until we see your creds

If you’d be happy at UF, then you don’t need any more apps.
That is, if you’ve assassed your chances well. Your “matches” are all very hard to get into…probably not much easier than Cornell, which you call a reach.

Berkeley is not a match for any OOS students.Your chances of getting in are around 10%. You should find more matches and another safety[ unless you wuld be perfectly happy at UF]. And you should apply early to UVA if that is your first choice, unless you need to compare financial aid packages.

Creds:

Asian/Causasian
3.8 UW GPA

780-M
690-CR
640-W

Math II-640
USH-650
Phys- 660

Captain of Tennis Team
Lettered 4 Years
2 Jobs (Waiter/Bagboy)
Decent EC’s
Residency: Florida

I think my matches are fairly accurate. You all are saying Berkeley is very tough OOS to get into and I am sure that is correct. I was simply saying that Berkeley, UVa, and G-town were all similar schools. I wouldn’t be THAT happy at UF because I think I am much better than that school but it is a good safety. (My SAT II’s are going to go way up; I didn’t have time to study for them but I am going to over the summer)

So, is 5 enough?

Sorry, forgot ACT=32
Rank 17/465
IB Program/Take AP’s online

I’d say 5 is enough, if you are sure those are the 5 you really want. Personally, I applied to 11 schools, but in retrospect, had I really thought it through, I would probably have applied to just 4 or 5.

berk, gtown, and uva wont be matches if you dont raise your sat I score

I agree with calvinnnn that Berk, gtown and uva are reaches, and I also think UF is a match for the same reason - they have been known to reject students who got into Harvard.

I don’t think you have enough schools on your list. You need to add 2 TRUE safeties and 2-3 TRUE matches. You don’t realize how competitive it is out there.

Good luck.

Good luck.

No, 5 is not enough. There is a line of thought that says the fewer the apps the more thoughtful your approach. However, the admissions game has become so chancy, so inherently random and subjective, I would cast a wide net. In his fascinating book, the Black Swan, Taleb makes the telling point that when humans are asked to predict with 98% accuracy they still get it wrong. For example, if asked to predict the no. of lovers Catherine the Great had within a band of 2% error, most people do not say 1 to 250 which would be close to 98% accurate but something like 20 to 45, and so on.

We get everything wrong, so widen your net.

5 is not enough; you want 2 apply to as much as you can but not 2 much…theres no limit to how many colleges you can apply to anyway; regarding the expense; your high school should be able to provide fee waivers so check that out and start applying!

Cornell, UVA, Berkeley, and Georgetown are all reaches. UF is a match. I would choose one more match and 2 more true safeties.

I think I’d classify Georgetown as between match and reach (reasonable reach?), but you do need at least one true match and safety (one you would want to attend) on your list.

but if you want to just apply to those 5, its fine. just retake your sat I and II’s

Do you need financial aide? By applying to more schools would give you more options. If you don’t need financial aide, then apply to Cornell ED. With your stats and from FL, you will have a much better chance of getting into Cornell ED. I would check out Colgate (match), Tufts (match-reach). For reach, I would even throw in Duke because of your tennis EC.

I don’t usually respond to what are my chances posts, but I want to point out that the OP scored a 32 on the ACT (I will assume that he took the ACT with writing). This score places him at the 99th percentile. I would say that given this, s/he should focus on the SAT IIs (for those schools that require it). S/he might not even want to send his SAT scores to the schools that do not require SAT IIs.

I think you have a very good list, but I would addjust 1 more safety/matchy school you would be happy at.

Five is enough as long as you are perfectly happy to go to any of those five and you have enough schools that you will get into. Like some others are saying, I wouldn’t consider Georgetown, UVA, or Berkley as matches, and looking at some other posts from others who have applied instate to UF, it might not even be considered a safe match. Find more safeties!
