Is a 3.7 GPA really "low?"

My high school’s grading scale is extremely advanced. (Ex. An A ranges from 100-96.5.) Add-Ons for AP and honors are .05 and .025. With this situation, my GPA is a 3.65 uw 3.85 w. Is this GPA truly considered low when taken into account are my course rigor (six APs and 11 honors in my career) and the advanced grading scale? Any insight would be appreciated!

The GPA number by itself doesn’t really mean much without considering the context of your school.
What’s your class rank?

(I don’t know if colleges have a way of considering your actual grading scale. At my school, someone who earned a 93% in every class would have a 3.0 GPA. At other schools, someone who earned the same grades would have a 4.0. This doesn’t seem fair to me, but my school doesn’t record percentages on people’s transcripts and apparently colleges recalculate your GPA based on the letter grades.)

My school no longer does class rank, but I am in the top 15% as of last year.

If 3.7 is really low, I’m screwed with my (hopefully) 3.5

3.7 certainly feels terribly low, considering how many people here have 3.9’s and 4.0’s.
Even a 3.8 feels low. :(

It could even be too low for community college, so you’re correct in worrying about this.

Relax, colleges often take in the context of applicants’ schools when going through the motions of admissions. Your school will send a profile (or something along those lines) and that’s what they use to “evaluate” you. I really would not worry. (Although I understand your stress. My school does that, too. Only it isn’t as severe.)

Depends on what standard you’re comparing it to. No high or low can be properly attributed without a predefined standard. >.>

If a 3.7 is considered low, I’m doomed.

Logically it shouldn’t be low, but the way grade inflation is even a 4.0 doesn’t mean much anymore.

Only on CC…

I agree with Lotami. It’s technically high, but it’s hard not to feel stupid with the people with 4.0 unweighted and 5.0 weighted all around here.

I suppose a 3.7 would be low on a 100 point scale, LOL.

Hey, when I look my 3.7 GPA and the courseload that I’m taking, I’m proud of it. It really depends on what the standard you’re using to judge it. And to the poster who said a 3.7 may be too low for even a community college, you have to be kidding. For most “good” schools, a 3.7 is a perfectly acceptable grade point average.

^He was being sarcastic (at least I hope so), no worries

no it’s high

^it’s below average for top 20 colleges, but in general, yes

It just depends on a lot of factors. People will give you different answers for different reasons.

No, it’s really good actually.
