Is anyone watching April?

Poor April. We all remember what those last few weeks and days were like.

Yes I am watching on and off. Every time I click on the live cam I am thinking that I probably have missed it – but there she is still waiting. Poor thing, hope it comes quickly and easily for her.

I figured I would miss it last night so watched a U tube video of a giraffe giving birth in the wild. It was really
amazing. So now I feel I have an idea of what will happen.

Thank you for telling us about April. I take a peek every once in awhile, and it’s very soothing to watch her.

I’ve been watching. Feel so badly for her. I was worried she wasn’t sleeping much but I read that, at least in the wild, giraffes only sleep around 30 minutes a day! What? :open_mouth:

She’s so cute. I hope she delivers soon.

I’ve watching too much! She really looks uncomfortable.

You pay $13 a month?

I spent way too long last night watching April…you can get the webcam on aprilthegiraffe.com .

“You pay $13 a month?”

What do you mean, @bookworm?

Boy, being pregnant for 15 months as a giraffe sounds pretty tough. It makes human gestation of 9 months seem like much easier by comparison.

LOL wondering if that is her “husband” in the pen next door who is just pacing around aimlessly.

Hopefully when she’s not in labor, they have a nicer enclosure and more space to spread out and run and just a nicer place to “hang out” in. The little box she’s in seems a bit dreary.

Unfortunately, I think that’s it, @himom, because the neighboring giraffe has been in there all the time as well. Sad that they seem to “winter” in such a depressing setting. :frowning:

I’m glad they upgraded most of the enclosures at the Honolulu Zoo. Originally they were like that, as were most zoos. It did take money to improve the enclosures and give the animals more space and some landscaping and vegetation. I strongly feel zoos should allow the critters more space and a more homey environment if they are going to keep these lovely creatures captive. If they can’t, they should consider only keeping smaller critters who aren’t as hemmed in with such small spaces.

Up close and personal with April’s tongue!

I think they have much bigger outdoor spaces but this zoo is in upstate NY and it’s winter here. I don’t think the giraffes would do well in their outdoor facility.

I can’t imagine those small hooves and long legs work well on ice and snow.

I’m watching April online, too. She is indoors because of the weather outside at the moment, or at least that is what I heard on the news today.
