Is Clemson worth paying OOS tuition

@CollegeorBustNE
Oh ok I didn’t realize that…I’ll see if any of the dates work for us.

Each college has specific dates. Usually 2

@CollegeorBustNE
I just checked the dates. We need something during our April break so FYD won’t work for us.

@CollegeorBustNE
Oops sorry I mean FTD!!

@jmsstb We are in same boat - have great acceptances from other Business schools, UMass Isenberg as instate, and many others. Clemson shows us as full pay even with a lower EFC - Their FA office was not helpful in clearing anything up - not a good sign. But our son loves Clemson and the weather etc. But hard call on $20k more! We applied to many schools, he got in to all (waiting on VT and Bentley) and I did NPC on about 5 of them all coming up with similar costs so did not do Clemson until he got accepted and just assumed it would be similar and would WORK!

So we did do our research but Clemson appears to be an outlier - as an adult $20k is not worth it as one can get a great education at most of the USA’s colleges. Paying the extra for some nice weather and pretty campus is a hard sell!

My D20 is faced with a similar decision…OOS at UGA or in state at UNC. I am pushing for in state. The schools seem similar to me. Side note, I have a S18 at NCSU, not in COE but in COT which is also tough, and they seem to let in a lot of kids in the second round from past experience. He also was worried about it being too similar to high school but doesn’t see anyone from high school there and has had a great time meeting new people. Best of luck…I say save the money.

We just went to the admitted student day for college of science on 2/22 and they said that the merit aid will not be announced until 2/28 or 3/1. We too are hoping for merit aid as we do not qualify for financial but our student will be turning down significant scholarships from other schools (Alabama, UTK, Baylor, USC).

@sunsweet odd as by all accounts merit based scholarships were announced few days ago. My D20 received $7500, which is not going to be sufficient to make it competitive since we also don’t qualify for any financial aid.

@netpro that is what we were told on Sat by one of the advisors for science majors, so she likely did not know. That being said, I just called the FA office to double check. Unfortunately, they base their merit aid on BOTH SAT/ACT test scores AND being in the top 10% of your HS class which is ridiculous. That means that all high schools are the same?? D20 attends one of the most rigorous, competitive and largest HS in our state, so even though she was well-above the SAT threshold, because she was not in the top 10% of the class, she gets no merit aid. :frowning:

@sunsweet It is all about the metrics. Clemson wants to show that X% of the incoming class rank in the top 10% of their HS class. So they spend their merit aid trying to boost that number. Not a reflection on your child at all.

Wait I’m confused. OOS merit awards were already awarded. Are you saying they could get more? If child was getting one it was mentioned in their acceptance letter & it is already on iroar. @sunsweet can you explain

@CollegeorBustNE there was some confusion on our part re: merit awards. We were told, incorrectly, that merit awards would be issued by 2/28 and would be in the portal, that not everyone received mention of a merit award in their acceptance letter.

One thing to consider is direct admission to engineering and percentage that get their choice of engineering disciplines.

Thank you for the clarification. My DD did receive a merit award (was mentioned in acceptance), you had me thinking she would get more. We are not eligible for financial aid & we are OOS

My daughter was accepted to Clemson for engineering and Calhoun Honors and received what I think is the top merit award of 12k for OOS. She loves everything about Clemson. The only problem is we are from Tennessee and she can attend UTK for free and their engineering program is ranked higher than Clemson. Clemson will cost us 42k a year. We have saved enough money for her to do either. She has multiple better offers financially from other schools but I think her heart is with Clemson. I think she feels like Clemson does not want her a much as other schools based on the low merit money this year. Too, we have told our kids they can have the excess college money if they do not use it. Any thoughts would be appreciated

@CONNER1234 tough decision. Although the idea that clemson does not want her enough is not quite accurate. She did get the highest OOS merit award they are giving this year. The decrease from previous years for the top amount is apparently related to a decrease in funding from the SC Legislature. It has nothing to do not have love for this years top OOS applicants.

Good luck to you and daughter as you make this difficult decision

@CONNER1234 Unless money isn’t an issue then $168k total vs $0 is a no brainer. It’s more than $168k when you factor tuition increases and travel. Especially if she’s thinking grad school or professional degree.

To OP, you need to visit the college before making any decision. I think you have some misconceptions about the diversity of Clemson. UConn is much more racially diverse then Clemson. Clemson is also a more conservative college, not sure if this is a pro or con for you?

Both colleges have similar rankings in engineering and overall National rankings and have similar size student body with similar acceptance rates and student test scores.

I’m not sure Clemson is worth the extra $100,000 unless you have already saved the money in a college account.

I think it depends on a few factors…a big one being finances. What loans would you need for your younger daughter? UConn is an outstanding, nationally ranked university. What is she getting from Clemson (also excellent) that she can’t get from UConn?

My D attended a highly ranked OOS state school. Our top instate school, despite being outstanding, does not compare to the school that she ultimately chose.

I think you need to visit, and I think you need to really decide what Clemson has that UConn does not…and whether that “thing” is worth the extra money that you will be spending. I am not convinced that Clemson has the diversity she is seeking.

It is a personal choice. We too are in state CT. My D got into UCONN Storrs, honors college & Academic Excellence merit. Clemson for us is the winner. You can’t beat the opportunities of Calhoun Honors.
