Is golf a "rich man's" sport?

^ .

no it is not a rich man’s sport.

it just seems that way because it’s associated with country clubs.

well it had that connotation

Kind of.

Golf in itself is very expensive…grounds fees are expensive, the clubs are expensive (even to rent), the clothes are expensive (and some places won’t let you play in “street” clothes)…you get the idea.

However, there are some courses that let you play cheaper after certain hours (AKA “Twilight time”), and playing on a HS time is a good way to play for free (we always played for free during our season).

Yes it is a rich man’s sport. I ditto everything HGFM says.
in middlesschool all the rich boys at my school talked about golf until they trasferred to rich private schools that accepted them b.c. they had the money…not the brains (well…thats my mean, honest opinion)

golf is a classy man’s sport. big difference.

Yes…much more than other sports.
Soccer, basketball, football…all can be played for cheap. Golf? Not so much. Throw tennis in there as well.

There’s a golf course by my house and it’s about $500,000 membership to play there a year. So yeah, it’s a rich sport.

wow camaro, what course is that? not very many courses are that expensive. Pebble Beach maybe? =P The best course around here is really nice, and is like $1000 for an adult for unlimited golf/cart/range. like $700 for a student. Golf doesn’t have to be too expensive. When the average person goes way in debt to buy a brand new car for $20000, I don’t think golf is a “rich mans” sport.

It’s by the New York Harbor.

[Bayonne Golf Club - New York Harbor](http://www.bayonnegolfclub.com/)

My friend works there and says he makes $1000-$1500 in tips a week. Guys like Bill Clinton, Rudy Guliani, NJ Nets players, etc. all play there.

Hopefully I’ll get a job there this summer :)

IN the sense that you need $300-500 clubs to be able to play consistently (renting is way more expensive and not really practical)…on the other hand, you can spend that much on lacrosse, swim, etc, equipment (I know a swimmer who pays $300 per suit that lasts her 4 competition days…)

also, there are much fewer places to play golf-you can only go to a driving range, mini-golf, public golf course, or country club

the public courses by me (18 holes) are about $50-70 per game, and then an additional fee for golf cart, etc

hmm your saying that golf is a rich man’s sport because you pay a lot for it.

but is paintball a rich man’s sport? (yes, we’re considering paintball a sport for the sake of argument). A good marker costs around $300+, full jerseys cost $100+, and the paintballs themselves cost around $50 - $200 for a good amount that will last you and your friends a day (if your playing speedball). Then you have to pay for any upgrades, replacements, and installations.

EDIT:
hmm, then again, maybe you do need to be rich to play.

“hmm your saying that golf is a rich man’s sport because you pay a lot for it.”

You just proved the point. Not many non-rich people have the money to play.

Golf costs a lot in comparison with other sports. But in the US it’s not as bad.

In countries like Japan and Korea, where land is at a premium, the only way to even get on a golf course is with membership cards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I also think paintball IS an affluent hobby…

Buying all those different clubs and stuff does cost a lot…

The one I’m a member of cost my parents 1.2 mil to get in, though I don’t consider ourselves very rich, it is not cheap to play golf

I wouldn’t necessarily say golf is a rich man’s sport. My family is not rich by any means. My mom works two jobs. I got my first set of golf clubs for a Christmas present when I was 11. The whole set cost $75. I have probably averaged over 100 rounds per season ever since (where I live, there is only a 7 month season at best).

When I was 15, I bought a new set of clubs for myself for $150. That was the reason I had to get a job. That is what most of my money goes to now.

That is certainly not to say that golf cannot be expensive. I know people who buy new clubs every 4-6 months for about $2,000 per set, who wouldn’t consider it anything if they lost $1,000 in bets on the course in a single day. That certainly is not me, though. I play at the local muni where I pay $120 per year for a membership and $450 for a season cart lease. I would not say that I am rich, just dedicated. I really enjoy golfing and am willing to spend my money on it.

So, no, golf is not necessarily a rich man’s sport, but it can be and often is.

Golf is not neccessarily a rich man’s sport…but in general, it is.

If you go to the run-down municipal course I play at on Friday afternoons for $11, you’ll find a lot of guys in jeans with cheap, old clubs. I’ve played with a bunch of them, and they are generally blue collar or middle class.

If you go to the AMAZING country club where I work, you’re going to find a bunch of 50-year old white men wearing clothes that cost hundreds of dollars, using clubs that cost thousands of dollars, and talking about the lobster dinner they had last night.

Golf is expensive in general because of the clientele and its addicting nature…if it wasn’t addictive, people wouldn’t be willing to fork over ten thousand dollars for lessons to go from shooting 90 to shooting 85 or five hundred dollars to get a driver that goes five yards further than the old one.

I personally spend a couple thousand dollars each year on golf, and I pay for it entirely (almost) with my own money. Ironically, my income comes from golf…heh.

“The one I’m a member of cost my parents 1.2 mil to get in, though I don’t consider ourselves very rich, it is not cheap to play golf.”

You’re rich. If you can throw down that much money for a club, then you have money.

“The one I’m a member of cost my parents 1.2 mil to get in, though I don’t consider ourselves very rich, it is not cheap to play golf”

IF your dad is an MD at GS then you’re rich no question.
