Is it bad to write a supplemental essay about something mentioned in my activities tab

For a supplemental essay for Michigan about a community I belong to, I want to write about my place in my gym community going from being a beginner to now teaching all my beginner friends about how to properly lift. Although it’s a very weak EC, I still listed it at the bottom of my activities list. Would this be double dipping or bad since I’m kind of saying the same thing twice or since it’s maybe a little more in depth would it be okay.

This is almost exactly what my son wrote about. It worked for him though he wasn’t trying for elite schools. I don’t think weightlifting is a weak EC.

Lots of students write about an EC o work it into an essay. I think it’s fine. Good luck!

Sounds fine to me.

Helping others is almost always a good thing. Helping others to learn to lift correctly seems like a very reasonable thing to write about.

Totally fine. Is that a place you belong and contribute to? Sounds like a good essay to me.

Your activity listing will define what you do in short form.

Your essay will highlight you - what you stand for, how you impacted and engaged the community, what you gained from it, etc.

So no issue at all.

Another reason it’s a good choice is that it’s at the bottom of your EC list (less likely to be noticed by the readers) as opposed to the top of the list, which could have appeared to be slightly more repetitive (but probably still acceptable.)

You can write about anything. But keep in mind who you are writing to. Each school might have a different flavor. At Michigan “Leaders and Best” is a real thing. You helping others is leadership. Being active in high school can translate to you being active on their campus. Michigan likes students that are taking part of their student experience. It’s not what you write about. It’s how you write about it. Good luck.

Exactly.

Leadership is not about getting your way. Leadership is not about telling other people what to do.

Leadership is about listening, solving problems, and helping other people to be their best. If @Jakelolno8 has been helping other people improve their exercise routine, this is a good step in that direction.

This is perfectly fine.

For this type of essay, schools essentially want to know how you’ll be a part of the school community and whether you’ll uplift others.

When people think writing about “EC” is problematic, they usually mean listing out ECs like a resume. Yours is not that. Essays are spaces for you to give a voice/perspective behind your activities.
