Hello! I’m moving to lower Manhattan but would like to send my child to a school in Brooklyn. I’m interested in Saint Ann’s, Packer, and Brooklyn Friends. My only concern is whether or not kids at those schools also come from Manhattan? I’d really like him to have some other kids to commute with.
So I guess my question for any parents or teachers at Saint Ann’s, Packer, and Brooklyn Friends is: How many of the students come from Manhattan? Just a ballpark idea is great. 20%? 40%? 60%? Thanks so much!
I don’t have the answer to you specific questions, but I’m in Lower Manhattan and know plenty of kids going to Saint Ann’s, Poly Prep, and Packer. All very easy to get to either by subway or bus through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. Great experience for kids. My kids go to school in the Bronx - much more difficult to get to.
ETA: We also know plenty of Lower Manhattan kids going to Brooklyn Tech and Brooklyn Latin.
Have known kids from Hoboken at Packer and Brooklyn Friends. Not exactly your question but suggests it’s not all Brooklynites. I bet the schools would tell you if you ask.
NYC is a rare breed when it comes to schooling. Kids from everywhere go everywhere. Yes, there will be plenty of Manhattan kids at Brooklyn schools, especially St. Ann’s and Packer. I’m sure the schools will give you the percentages.
One thing to consider as a parent…your child’s friends will probably be more Brooklyn oriented. Are you cool ferrying them to their friends/letting them go on their own?
I’m not too familiar with NYC schools, but I have a friend who lives in Washington Heights and went to school in Brooklyn (I think she had about an hour commute on the subway each way)
