Also, If your S/D is worried about “getting in” and wants to study in College of ARts and Sciences as well – would it be better to apply to CAS and do a year in that - participating in MT as much as possible and then trying to “get in” after going to UM a year?

Do students ever transfer into MT? is it possible?

Son is interested in IR and science so MT isn’t the only thing he’d like to study while in college.
But loves the idea of MT at U of Michigan as the school has such a great reputation.

First, when you apply to Michigan for the BFA in MT, Michigan does an academic prescreen prior to auditions to see that the student could be admitted to Michigan. After auditions, if the student is accepted to the BFA in MT, then a more thorough look is made for academic acceptance. If the student is not accepted for MT, the prescreen is not an official acceptance to Michigan. For that the student would need to have applied at the same time as for the BFA, say to the college of Arts and Science for regular acceptance.

There is a young man in my daughters class double majoring in engineering and in the MT BFA, I believe it will take him five years to finish. Not an easy thing to do. :)

As far as transfers, yes it happens, but not often. There were three this year though, but I believe two transferred from other MT BFA programs.

Other than student run productions, your son would not be able to audition for the department productions if he were not part of the the MT class. There are some wonderful opportunities within the student directed pieces, but I just wanted clarify where he would be able to participate.

I wasn’t clear on whether your son is going to audition for MT this year at all, or wait a year. It is always harder to get in as a transfer, so I would suggest he auditions this year and also applies for regular admission, therefore if he is not accepted to the BFA, hopefully he could still attend and follow his other interests.

I hope I have helped to clarify a few of your questions. ") Good Luck to you and your son.

Karenmommy, Be aware that this year at U of Michigan there is also an audition prescreen video which must be submitted for those applying for MT admission. Upon review, the department will then make an invitation to certain students to fully audition. Just the application process has become even more intensive for some of these schools. You can find the info on the department web page. I also wasn’t sure if you’re referring to your son applying for fall 2012 or later. Good luck to your son!

You can not apply early decision with MT.
At least with LAS (letters and sciences) you can dual apply for admission and they will send it both places. The woman at the office of MT is very helpful. I found her twice when I have called early in the am
The kids said there are fabulous productions put on by non-MT kids as a club type effort. There were a couple musicals and plays each year so that’s an option as well.
The one thing my D is looking at is that Michigan’s spring semester is done end of April and they have another semester done early June. That gives her an opportunity to take other classes (If she makes it in) before almost everyone else is done.

We made sure to apply early, get the pre-screening videos in by 11/1, waited 10 days, got a nice email yesterday inviting my son to audition in Ann Arbor. If there ever was a labor of love, this is it. Much to do before we rest. Luckily we have relatives in Northville to stay with for the audition.

Many thanks. We always thought that these super schools like michigan and carnegie mellon were very long shots but this invite has given us new confidence. Good luck to everyone else. Don’t give up.
