Is it possible to get a full ride from USC?

what does it take to get a full ride from USC? most of their scholarships seem to only cover tuition

The largest scholarship offered by USC is the for full tuition. That doesn’t pay for housing, food, books, or school fees (like the orientation fee, or lab fees). As far as I know, there is no official scholarship offering a full ride on all of these things. You might be able to get some of them covered through financial aid. Also, if you become and RA, you will get free room and board (usually in a single!).

yea if you get trustee and financial aid on top of that it is possible to get a full ride

whats an RA?

get really good at football or another sport.

i think it stands for Resident’s Assistant, but could someone clarify what a RA does, how you become one, etc?

I think it’s Resident Advisor. And, I think they offer moral support to those living in their building :)

yea football, baseball swimming basketball would all help

So how do you become a Resident Advisor? It seems to be a easy thing to do to get your room and board paid for.

mcnair–while i am pretty good at basketball (4 years varsity on a very good team, top 3 PG in tucson for class of 2008), i am not even close to skilled enough to getting a scholarship from a major D1 school like USC. i dont think most people know how hard it is to go major D1 in a highly competetive sport like basketball. its mostly talent, and a majority of people like myself aren’t blesses with great height or freakish athleticism. with that i mind, i am definately not banking on getting a athletic scholarship at USC

I guess the best you can do is do well on SATs for Trustees, apply for all possible outside scholarships, and cross your fingers for federal aid.

and i’m pretty sure freshmen can’t be RAs because that wouldn’t make much sense…

the trustee’s scholarship is really competive right? i think on the website it said only 100 people get it

Info about becoming an RA-
http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/ResEd/Jobs.html#ra

One of the girls in my hall received a full ride from ROTC…I think they paid for books and living expenses too, but I’m not sure.

Yup, RA is residential advisor. You can’t apply for it until at least the second semester of your freshman year. It is a year long position, where you plan activities and social gatherings, act as a counselor, and deal with disciplinary problems in your residential hall or apartment. You have to take a two unit course (EDCO 030x) in order to apply, then fill out an application. The application then goes through a screening processes, and some applicants are chosen for interviews. From the interview group, some are chosen as RA’s and some are back-ups. About 50% of those who apply get a position (I think).

If anyone in here has been an RA, does it affect your social life, the way you interact with other people on your floor, etc?

Amazon, ask me that question again in a few months and I’ll have an answer for you. At the moment, I don’t really know, although I certainly anticipate that it will largely affect the way I interact with people on the floor. How couldn’t it? You have to be an advisor, and also are in charge of doing things like breaking up parties.

when i stayed in pardee for explore, the RA seemed to be an adoptive mother of sorts… she still had friends, though, but i think everyone knows you and maybe sees you as an “elder” rather than a “peer”… just the impression i got.

It would be great if you students at USC posted how much scholarship money you got, which scholarships you recieved, and how much you are paying each year.

USC is a school that i am very interested in and i want to know if it will be affordable (considering my in state school Univ of Ariz would be completely free for me) so any help would be appreciated

bballpg04- It isn’t very easy to get tons of that kind of info from students on these boards- I wish it was! There’s not much action here now because acceptances are complete so most students are busy doing other stuff. But if you want some of the info you asked for, do a search for “scholarships” or “financial aid” in the USC forum (Advanced Search). You will find lots of threads where this has been discussed- especially in January when the admissions scholarships started to come out (Trustees, Presidential, Associates, Deans).

Hey hey hey… be nice. Just because we are on summer break doesn’t mean some of us aren’t still answering questions (Well, I’m actually studying abroad, so not on summer break yet!). I’ll give you some quick answers.

I have A Trustee Scholarship.
Housing Costs are easy enough to look up, as are meal plans. I’ll leave that part of the calculation to you.
For books, I usually spend about five hundred to six hundred dollars. Note- I’m both premed (science books can get really, really expensive) and TO (lots of reading books necessary), so my cost may be higher than some.
Parking is also look-up able. Depend on whether I’m on campus or off.
I would estimate about 200-300 dollars on other school fees (on campus health insurance (I wave out of the off campus stuff), lab fees etc.).

Add whatever I happen to spend on recreational activites, and that is it. I’m sure my mom (who reads these boards but isn’t an actual member), will email me with a more accurate account of it all. If so, I’ll update you.
