I’m going into my senior year of high school at a private catholic school. The school’s management is very disfuctional, and the rules they have set in place are illogical and intentionally deceiving. It probably just sounds like I have senioritis, which I’m sure that I do, but I am definitely not the only person to think this. It is typical for teachers and many parents (as well as most, if not all, students) to question the school’s true priorities, and on numerous occasions the principle has had to officially apologise to the student body for decisions they have made in the past. At one point, an action made by this school was actually a controversial topic on national news for over a week. To put it simply, I’m really tired of the manipulation, and it is not just because I’m a senior.
Over the past few years, I’ve definitely considered transferring to my district’s public school. The only thing that has stopped me is this school’s generally poor reputation, especially compared to public schools in the surrounding districts. Their issues have not advanced to the extent of my current situation, but it is also not worth the trouble of making the switch.
A few years ago, when I was deciding which high school I would go to, a friend of mine was able to apply for permission to attend a high school outside of her district. I remember being interested, so I asked her mom about it, and she said that she knew someone in the governmental department that processed these kinds of requests.
This girl had been going to the same private kindergarten/elementary/middle school her whole life (meaning that she had never attended any of her district’s public schools), and she was given permission to attend a school outside of her district. I’ve been doing more research recently, and from what I have been able to find it seems like you need a really good reason to leave your district. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a case where someone transferred to a public school outside of their district without previously attending the school within their district, so it seems strange to me how she would be given permission so easily. I could be totally wrong about the transfer rules though, since it has been difficult to find a straight answer.
Rambling aside, basically my question is if it is even possible for me to transfer to a school outside of my district without a better reason than “I don’t like my available options.” I don’t know if this changes anything, but I do have family who live in the school district that I am interested in. Would it be possible to just say that I “live” with them?
Sorry about the wall of text for such a dumb question, but I really appreciate any guidance that anyone can offer. Let me know if this is something that varies depending on state or school, I can share my state but I won’t for the moment because I’m not sure if it’s allowed. Thanks to anyone who actually suffered through reading all of this!!
