I come from a poor family, and I want to go to UCLA, but I’m going to need a scholarship, and probably a student loan. So I want to get ahead on the game. But is it too early to be looking at scholarships for the HS class of 2019? And if not where could I find some?
Most of your financial aid (including scholarships, grants, loans, work-study, etc.) will come directly from your college, not from outside sources. If you’re interested in a particular college, you can Google “[college name] scholarships” to see what kind of scholarships they offer and what you need to do to apply for them. For example, here is UCLA’s scholarships page. In many cases, colleges will automatically consider you for scholarships when you apply.
As you’re making your list of colleges, you should run net price calculators on each school’s website to get an idea of what kind of financial aid you would get. Make sure you have a safety school, both financially and in terms of admissions. I would recommend looking for schools that are known for generous merit aid and/or need-based grants. There are lots of old threads that list some of them.
If you are a resident of California, you should be go to go for admission. Non-residents do not receive anyuniversity funding.
