Are you sure that’s not an elk?
I go away with my kids and their families a week before Xmas. It’s less crowded and less expensive. We always go to an all inclusive. It’s a bit of a treat to all of us before all the craziness of holidays.
Usually, D1 and her family come to our lake house for Thanksgiving every year. D3 sometimes gets here too. Unfortunately, DSIL is taking a new job and won’t have any vacation time. So, the only one who is coming will be our GS who goes to school an hour from us. It will be great to see him. He isn’t going home for Thanksgiving because of the Egg Bowl on Saturday (Old Miss vs Mississippi State). He will get to go home about 2 weeks later for Christmas.
We alternate our Christmas travel. One year to Virginia to see D1 and family. The next to Florida to be with D2 and family and D3. We stay with D3 who has a condo on the beach. It is so much easier to travel to be with them than they trying to travel with children, dogs and gifts.
I think this is something that I will be especially cognizant of if and when ds ever marries and has a family. Right now, even though he has a dog, it’s easier for him to come to us. If we go to him we have to stay in a hotel as he’s in a one-bedroom apartment.
I think many of us experienced difficulty trying to manage parental expectations when our children were younger and have vowed to dial those back with our own adult children. I have friends where both the H’s and W’s parents were even local to them. Both sets expected, “appearances,” on the holidays. It was very taxing on them. They don’t do that to their own adult kids.
